VMWare and PPPoE

I am considering moving my ASG7 from physical to virtual hardware.  Currently in the physical, I have 2 nics. One internal, and one connected directly to my DSL modem and using PPPoE.

My VMWare box is SUSE Enterprise Server 10, running VMWare Server 1.0.1.  I have two nics in this system. There is one other VM, and that is my AD DC (does not do much).  One NIC is setup for VMWare (VMNet 0,1,8 the usual). The DC is running bridged (VMnet0).  What I want to do is connect the second nic in the VMWare box to the DSL modem, just like the physical box. Problem is, VMWare won't let you use a physical NIC.

My question... What is the best way to do PPPoE.  Do I setup SUSE to do it? Is there a configuration in SUSE I can do to pass NIC configuration to VMWare and then to Astaro?

I am testing with the Astaro 7 VMWare build.  I would like to have the second NIC setup so that only VMWare, and thence Astaro has any access. I found one post on how to do this with Windows as the host (no, I will not switch my host from Linux to Windows).

    I use Astaro on Vmware and have had much success.  The true key is memory.  Give Astaro plenty of RAM as you don't want it using Swap-Space.  Disk I/O in virtual servers is much slower than direct so give it the ram it needs and it will perform well.

    As for configuration, setup the VMware server with two dedicated nics (dont' use auto, actually point them correctly).  The two virtual nics need to point to two physical nics, one on the inside network, one on the outside network.  The physical nic on the host machine can be configured with a "dummy" Ip address so that it does not interfere with the PPPOE function.  Then, install Astaro like normal, configure your Internet address.  Once installed, login and configure Astaro for the PPPOE as you would a normal physical server and all will be well.  Remember, the Virtual Network adapter is routed through the host physical adapter transparently to the host system.  Also, on the Host OS, you will want to configure the "inside" adapter with the default gateway of your Virtual Internal IP address for the Astaro firewall so that your "host" can get to the Internet.

    Let me know if you need further clarifications as I have done this on several occasions for testing as well as production configurations.

    please give me some more information about this.

    I currently use V6 and want to switch to V7.
    I run a Vmware Server under SLES10 and want to consolidate the standalone V6 Server.

    I am fiddeling around since the weekend in trying to get things to work, but till now no success.

    I set up a box with Ubuntu Server 6.10 and the VMwareServer 1.0.2.
    Having one nic connected with pppoe and then set up the virtual nic with NAT to this nic worked. So I could update the 6.202 image to 6.304.

    But when I gave the external nic a dummy ip-address (10.10.10.1), switches it to bridged mode in VMware and tried in ASL to connect via pppoe, there is no chance.

    I would appreciate very much, if you would share your knowledge about the right setup.

    Hi,

    this weekend I succeeded with the pppoe connection.

    For me it worked, that I set the nic to receive ip-address by dhcp, so that it gets no ip.
    Then in vmware set the third interface bridged to that nic and in ASL set external interface with pppoe to eth2.

    It's working now for two days and I hope it will remain stable.
