VIA C7 Processor support

If they are x86 compatible then Astaro should work on them.  But for use in new appliances?  There are better options for Astaro, like Pentium Ms or Core Solos.

I had read in another thread that v6 (and now v7) was built for 686 and the VIAs were 586.

I almost went with the Jetway or Migus board + 3-port gigabit daughter card, but seeing as they were using Realtek chips for the daughter card, I thought it would be best to pass.  

I've had a couple issues with various Realtek chips being flaky & a little unstable in the past with Astaro.  

Astaro's support for the Intel cards is excellent and the Intel MT card is probably the best dual-port GoC card on the market.  
Also being able to pick them up at less than $100 a pop is nice as well! [:D]

Yeah, I was tempted to use the Gbit daughter card, because it was only $5 more, but figured it was just overkill. I've had really good luck with the RTL8139 (8100C) based cards. I've also had good luck with the Intel single port 10/100s as well. I've never tried the Gbit cards. None of my equipment or requirements warrant a Gbit interface. Now I just have to order another set of Jetway equipment for my mail server and a spare MoBo.

I only have gigabit switches and equipment at my place.  The others have 10/100 networks.  However, these firewalls should last a good 3-4 years easy.  

Also, being over 1000 miles away, it's worth paying a little premium for piece of mind and getting them something that will be reliable for the long-haul.

The biggest factor in going with the dual port Intel gigabit cards was price.  The 10/100 dual port Intel cards are actually more expensive now than the comparable gigabit cards...go figure!

BTW, I assume your using the built-in SATA port on the Jetway board that has the CN700 chipset & Via C7 processor?  

Did you have any trouble getting ASL to recognize the SATA chip?  I almost went SATA with the EN-15000 build, but had concerns about chipset support since it was so new.  Instead I picked up an inexpensive 40GB Hitachi 2.5" PATA notebook drive.  

I'll have to give the SATA stuff a try if I build another one.  Actually, I too am looking at putting together a small web server with a C7 Jetway or Migrus boards.  Maybe I can spin the SATA wheels with that build.  

Regardless, I'll recoup the cost in electricity saved alone once I take the old dual Athlon MP 2400 off-line.  That thing is a beast on the utility bills.

Jetway 3 port 10/100 card = $40USD
Together they cost less than the DFE-580 quad port NIC.

Wow, very inexpensive. Where are you getting that Jetway NIC? I see that NewEgg has the board for $145.

Coupled with a PicoPSU and a high efficiency PSU brick and a single hard drive I bet that thing would only use 20-25w at idle.

I'm using the Morex 2699 case and the included external 60W power brick. I got everything except the 40GB SATA at mini-box.com. I got a 512MB ram stick there, but this thing never uses more and 125-130MB. I may swap in a 256MB stick and use the 512 in my mail server.

I was running ASL on a Compaq DL380 Dual P2-733, with 2 10K 18GB drives in RAID-1 using the onboard RAID controller. I switched temporarily to a couple of Linksys routers for firewall and shut down a 2TB file server that was spinning 8 SATA drives. My electric bill went down $50/mo.

Has anyone else tried the Jetways or C7s?
Especially with the Gigabit daughterboard.

i have 7.001 installed on a VIA EPIA CN-10000 (C7 1GHz) with 512MB RAM. For about one week i had a SATA-harddisk installed, no problems with that. Now i'm running with a PATA-disk, onboard-nic, dual-port Compaq NC3134-NIC and PICO-mini-powersupply (with external AC/DC-powersupply). Works fine until now, but in my opinion a little bit to slow to use http-proxy, but maybe my (old) harddisk is to slow...

I doubt it's your harddrive that is too slow, it's likely either not enough memory causing swapping or the content scanner using up a lot of CPU power.

I just can't get those NICs to work under V7.
The VIA Onboard NIC is working fine but the additional gigabit nics do not.
I have seen others in this forum successfully use exactly this hardware. Most people still use V6, is there anyone who got that dammed daughterboad to work with V7?

I found out that the Gigabit NICs drop all outgoing packets (i.e. ifconfig shows no tranceived but a ton of dropped packets on the TX line). This seems to be a very rare problem caused either by crappy drivers or defective hardware.

I could really use some help here...
