Best appliance on market

Hi @all,

I was searching the web whole the day to find some preconfigured Astaro Appliances that meet my requirements for further testing.

Now I'm wondering why:

  • 95 % of the preconfigured appliances base on poor IDE / SATA1 HDDs, often only one HDD is built in. Most only have one powersupply, no ECC RAM, ... --> no redundancy [8-)] 


  • Most of the appliances are not very powerfull. In my headoffice I only have ~30 users but they are all powerusers. In addition there are some thousand mails a day and a huge amount of other connections from IM over Database-Connections to XML-RPC Connections f self written tools. I can't imagine that a weak Celeron / PIV with 1 GB RAM can handle this...

  •  Do you know resellers which sells appliances built on hih-quality, redundant hardware?


  •  Do you think it would better to build my own Gateway based on my favorite Hardware (HP DL Series, 1 dual core opteron, 2 - 4 GB RAM, 2xSCSI in Raid 1)


  •  Would you prefer a HA Concept with two appliances? I think the one mentioned HP-server would be more stable and better performing than two appliances...


  •  When do you think will version 7 be released?

    I think this is one of good sugestion ,and must be realized by team !!

    As far as I heard the rumours, there won't be anymore appliances except the one from Astaro itself. Don't know why, possible because of support issues. Don't know if they will terminate the software only license too.

    From my experience in doing business with appliances, 75 % of failures are from harddisk, 10% from failing fans and thermal death and maybe 5% from NIC failure.  

    HA,  as said, a single high quality machine is preferable over two lower quality machines in HA mode.

    HP servers are not so expensive if you buy via HP Renewal Program. Most hardware is less than 1 year old and has full HP guaranty. Availability is very important for me because I have a big amount of DMZ-Systems where Customers and Partners need 24/7/365 access!


    This server for example costs 1400 €:

    HP DL360G4p 3,2Ghz, 2GB, RPS, SAS

    1U Rack-Server
    1x Intel Xeon 3,2 GHz (max. 2 CPU's)
    2 GB (2x 1024 MB) PC3200 DDR2 SDRAM (max. 12 GB)

    We use a $500 clone box with an Athlon CPU, and three Intel 100pro cards.
    It serves our office with more than 50 PCs very well.

    Howdy,
    we have both, a asg220 apliance and IBM Servers with the astaro software.
    I think the ibm server ist the better choice than the asg220.

    But its more expensive cause the price for the software is much more expensive than the asg200. And instead of the HA option we have a cold standby server. No further costs than the hardware and in the case of a damaged server, just restore the backup on the cold standby and we are online in a few minutes.
