wierd enitial internet setup problem

Hello, yesterday I installed astaro v6 [the latest one that is downloadable as of yesterday] on an amd athlon 1900+ with 768 mb of ram. Everything went smoothly and I was able to successfully set up the interfaces, passwords and so on. However, even though my PPPOE interface is able to successfully connect and obtain an IP address, I still can not get onto the net. After some reading of the manual, I established that the firewall was supposedly blocking everything. So, for testing purposes only I made a rule that allowed absolutely everything to go through on all interfaces. This not solving the problem, I tried to set up masqueraiding. But every time I tried to create a rule, I would hit the "add" button but said rule would not appear in the table of rules. [note: I followed the exact steps outlined in "on line help"]. Did I miss something here? any help would be appreciated.

    Nope, though I created the external interface (a pppoe dsl connection that gets all information automatically), the masc rule doesn't stick. I made it just like you said, internal network to external pppoe interface on a different network card (eth1=internal and eth0=external), though the external interface is not called "external", it is called sympatico, does this matter? So, I installed astaro v6.3, set up the "internal address, network and brodcast" interfaces, then the "sympatico (address)" interface. I brought that one up and it got an IP and everything through PPPOE. Then, I added the packet rule (the only one in the list at present) "internal (network), to any services, to "sympatico address" (I also tried this with "any other interface"), allow". Then I made the masc rule that piped "internal (network) to "sympatico (address)" but I still can not serf the net. Is there anything else I can do? Please note that that masc rule didn't stick. I hit the add button but it still says that there are no nat rules defined. any help would be appreciated.

    batt,
    when you create a MASQ rule, you get drop down boxes to select from and you most definitely need MASQ or DNAT/SNAT rule if you are using packet filtering. If you are just using the proxy then don't need the masq rule. The MASQ rule must be between the interface card your PC is on and the card the internet is on, otherwise it doesn't allow connections.
