Jetway (via) C7 mobo + Jetway Gibabit module

I'm thinking about using this exact solution.
I'm trying to find out if the 7F2WE motherboard with the 1GHz C7 will work with v5, v6, or the new v7. It looks like v6 (maybe v5) will work with the new C7 processor.
The most interesting part, however, is the 3xLAN (10/100 or GBit) daughter card. I'm thinking about ordering this combo from mini-box.com and trying it out. If it doesn't work I'll use it as my mail server and get a SP13000 and a Dlink DFX-580 to use for Astaro.

Exactly, minibox has that nice LCD small case that everything fits in.  I'm almost certain that Astaro will run on the motherboard, as C7 processors will work with V5 and V6.  The big question is the networking hardware ... still no responses on support for these devices ... I wonder if Astaro will add the support if they don't have it now.

If I can't get Astaro V6 to work on this box, when I buy it, I may move to clarkconnect.  Not ideal, but there's more support for such hardware.

Just wanted to let anyone know, that the 3xGB NIC board was defective. It didn't work on XP and 98 as well unsing the original realtek drivers. The board always had the same issues: 100% Rx / Tx dropped (mostly Rx drops)

I just received my new system from mini-box.com (I got the m300 with the 3 port gig daughter card) and am trying to get ASG 7 installed. The problem I'm running into is that ASG only shows 1 NIC (the onboard) during setup. I booted with an Ubuntu 6.10 disk to see if the daughter card was working and Ubuntu recognized all 4 NICs and even pulled an IP from my DHCP server on my LAN that was plugged into one of the ports on the daughter card. I was able to access my local network over that port so I'm pretty sure the daughter card is not defective. At least DiePlage was able to get ASG to recognize the additional NICs. I'm brand new to ASG so I'm not sure if there is anything else I can try to get these to work. Just becuase it was an option during the beginning of the installation process, I tried using "classic" (which I believe runs the install without APIC), but the results were the same.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

PS, I just tried ASG 6.3 and it only recognized the on-board NIC as well (still no daughter card)

Are there any bios settings to enable any other features associated with the daughter card?  Might be worth taking a look.

FWIW, It sounds like in your post your doing a clean install, but just wanted to make sure.  I've had the pleasure of changing out NIC's in Astaro and rebooting...they obviously don't show up!  Anytime you change hardware, a fresh, clean install is required.

Also, are the 3x Gigabit ports showing up on the hardware snapshot screen?  (the screen during the install that shows, among other things, all NIC's in the system).  Counting the 3x daughterboard + the onboard NIC, there should be 4 seperate NIC's on this page, each with a different MAC address.  If not, something is not being detected.  

Try re-setting the BIOS to the factory defaults and maybe try turning OFF Plug & Play in the BIOS.  Play around with those settings and maybe the IRQ settings and see if that helps any.

When booted in Ubuntu, you should be able to figure out what driver Ubuntu is loading. Then the trick will be to find out if ASL has that driver at all or is shipping with an old driver.

I assume you were trying to install with the lastest V7 ISO?

BTW, if all 4 NIC's show up on the blue hardware detected screen, then usually 95% of the time, Astaro has the correct driver for the NIC.

I've gone through the BIOS (I usually do on new boards just to double-check all the settings) and there is nothing that I can see related to the daughter card. The fact that it shows up just fine in Ubuntu leads me to believe it's not a hardware problem, but rather a problem with ASG.

I am doing a clean install. As a matter of fact, I haven't gotten past step 3 where it lists out the hardware that ASG has found because it is only finding 1 NIC (the onboard) so I can't install it as a firewall until I have at least 2 NICs.

I'll play around with the IRQ settings in the BIOS to see if changing something might work, but I've already disabled all the onboard devices I'm not using (FDD, serial and parrallel ports) so I'm not sure there is going to be much more I can do. Also, as I said above, I'm leaning away from this being a hardware (or BIOS) problem due to the fact that I can see the NICs just fine in Ubuntu. I would think that no OS would be able to use the NICs if it was a hardware or BIOS issue.

I am using the lastes V7 ISO (7.002). I will take a look at what drives Ubuntu is using, but I'm not sure if that will do me any good since I don't know how to get ASG to use a different driver if that is the problem.

Also, another user (DiePlage) had already posted that during his/her install, the NICs were detected just fine, they just didn't work properly (which was later determined to be due to a defective daughter card) so I'm really at a loss as to how to get this to work.

OK, I just ran an lspci on the console and the daughter card is showing up as 3 of the following:
"Ethernet controller: Realtek Semicoductor Co., Ltd. Unknown device 0167 (rev 10)"

I'm guessing that means the drivers are not present for this device. I took a look at the daughter card and it has RTL8110SC on the chips of each of the NICs on the daughter card. I know the 8169 is the only realtek NIC listed in the HCL, but is there any way that I can get the driver for the 8110 installed on my box? If no, I'm going to have to try to return the gig-e daughter card and buy the 10/100 daughter card.

I believe that the 8110SC chipset uses the r5000 driver. It doesn't appear to be in Linus' kernel yet.

You can download the source from the Realtek website, but getting it loaded will be a PITA (have to compile from source, etc).

Your best bet is to get Astaro to add the driver. Time to open a trouble ticket!

Edit: I take that back. I think (but am not positive) that the latest r8139 driver upstream has support for the 8110SC chipset if I am reading the driver correctly. So the r8139 driver just needs to be updated.

I believe that support was added upstream on Wed, 26 Jul 2006 21:14:13 +0000. I think you would need kernel 2.6.18 for support or have to patch it in manually.

I'm new to ASG and not an expert with linux so could you provide me with some details about how to go about updating the driver?

Well, I'm not an expert, but I do know a few people that might qualify. And I'm a home user so I have no support to void. Do you know of anywhere I could find some directions on how to go about adding the driver so I can see just how difficult it would be? Right now I've got a 3com NIC in the PCI slot of my m/b so I can actually use my box, but I can't set it up how I want to because I only have 2 NICs. The sooner I get the daughter card to work, the sooner I can get this thing setup the right way.

The biggest problem with loading custom modules is that for every update that also updates the kernel, you'll also have to make sure you also update the drivers as well (assuming that the kernel update doesn't provide support for your NICs).

In the mean time you may want to look for an inexpensive multi-port NIC that fits. Logic Supply has a 4-port 10/100 card (full-height) for $105 which works well, we have 2 of them in one of our firewalls.

Drees, that won't be an option... the system in question is tiny, and does not have a full-size PCI slot.

Maybe someone should email support and ask if they can get the driver into the next ISO.

FWIW, we haven't had any luck in getting Astaro to update drivers in the past. Anyone else have luck? The drivers they are shipping in V7 are pretty old considering that support appears to have been added upstream last July.

Well, I gave up on getting the 3 port Gigabit daughter card to work and ordered the 3 port 10/100MB daughtercard. I threw that one in and re-installed Astaro and everything is working wonderfully now. I initially threw it in without re-installing and got them to show up, but the internal interface was tied to the PCI NIC I removed and it was just easier to re-install than to mess with trying to get it to work right.

Anyway, if Astaro ever adds the drivers for the 3 port gig daughter card (which uses the RTL8110SC chipset) then I'll probably add that back in, but until then, I'm happy I got everything working.

Anyone tried the Jetway 3-port GigaBit nics in 7.100 yet?

I'm thinking about getting this system... Newegg seems to have the motherboards but not the NICs... anyone recommend a US vendor?

Anyways, I figure if I'm going to have to build a system from scratch (as I don't have any micro-ATX boards), then I might as well go with the VIA as it uses much less power and is much smaller.
The 12watt 1.5GHz VIA CPU should make a good system that'd save $20-50/year on electricity over the PIII I have now (using 50-60W total).

Only limitation I can see with the VIA is that it is limited to 1GB RAM, and the CPU is not upgradeable (without buying a new motherboard).

So, for those who bought the mimibox 200 or 300, did anyone buy the LCD version and if so, does the LCD panel work (like with an Astaro appliance)?

I've setup LCD4Linux with a CF634 display on Astaro myself in the past (posted about it these forums), but on v7, it just segfaults (statically compiled).
Another user reported the same problem.

Because of that, I'm not going to spend the extra $ to get a case with an LCD for my mini-ITX project.
