HP ProLiant ML 310 G3 - Intel ICH7 Raid Controller - No Harddisc detected

As you've found out, Astaro ships a fairly old kernel which doesn't contain support for a lot of recent drive controllers, even though the main kernel may have contained support for that hardware for quite some time.

For example, the kernel shipped with Astaro 6.303 is version 2.6.10-58 which I understand they base off a Suse kernel.

The vanilla 2.6.10 kernel was released on 24-Dec-2004, nearly 2 years ago! I personally wish they would do a better job adding support for newer hardware on a regular basis as it has caused headaches for us in the past.

BTW, from what I understand the Intel ICH7 is not a "real" raid controller which does not help. http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html

You may want to try opening a trouble ticket with Astaro to see what they say. They will likely say "install a different raid controller or wait for V7 which may support it."

Seems like I'm stuck with a machine which won't work with Astaro...the trouble is, the machine was ordered for one of our customers and was originally planned to be deployed next Thursday..well, I took a look at the HCL of Astaro before I ordered the machine, but mainly to see if the PCI-X Dual Port Gig Ethernet Card from HP was supported..didn't bother to check if the On-Board "Fake-Raid" Controller from Intel was on the HCL, since I knew it was supported by the Linux Kernel..oh well, my bad it seems :-(

I'll definately open a ticket with Astaro, even though I'm sure it won't help much.

Hi doalwa, 

why don't you try the new ASL V7 Beta, which uses a newer kernel 2.6.16.
This one might support your new hardware.

The other alternative is to see if you can obtain a supported controller such as a 3ware to install into the machine.

Thanks a million times for your help, Folks, but I just couldn't believe my luck this morning.

Out of desperation I simply downloaded the latest Astaro ISO from Astaro's FTP (6.303) and guess what, suddenly the Harddisc was detected!

I also downloaded the HP ProLiant Firmware Update CD on Saturday, but only the BIOS of the Server was updated to the newest Version, and I didn't see any new options regarding the SATA Controller in the BIOS.

Maybe the new BIOS somehow offers a hidden SATA Legacy mode?? According to uname, Astaro 6.303 still uses a 2.6.10 kernel..maybe there's a patch included which offers SATA Support for the ICH7R Controller??

Either way, seems like my problem is solved!

I think Astaro has added newer SATA support somewhere along the way in the 6.x series, what version did you originally try to install from?

I originally tried Version 6.102, I'll think in the future I'll better check Astaros FTP first to save me the hassle :-)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure with version 6.2 or 6.3 they added some additional hardware support.
