Installation questions (NEWBIE)

Hi. I"m looking to put a old dell machine I have lying around to good use as a firewall. currently I have a dlink router wireless router that connects networks my  MAC and a laptop PC . My dell dimension 8100 has only 1 NIC, I've been reading that I need 2 is that right ? Also, what kind of NIC should I get that would be compadable ? Next, I have verizon FIOS as my internet provider, can I connect straight in to my new FIREWALL box ? Where would by wireless router sit ? 

I think that's it for now. I'm determined to make this work and learn something. Thanks for your help in advance whoever replies !!!

    Well my friend you need at least 2 interfaces to get Astaro working for you because it's illogical to have just one interface over any firewall or filtering/monitoring device. Obviously it's going to filter the incoming traffic to a network and then pass the filtered traffic via some outgoing interface.
    Secondly you need to look up the compatibility list for Dell 8100's board that which ethernet interface would it support but generally you could use Intel Pro 10/100/1000 cards or any other PCI cards, would work.
    Third I didn't get everything of what you meant by directly in but according to my understanding, you can easily use a DLink Wireless router with your firewall. You have 2 options, connect your firewall's internal interface with your wireless router via a ethernet cable and then you can either run your firewall in a bridge mode or routing mode. You can also use your router in a bridge mode if it supports bridging, this way you get a direct live IP on your firewall and makes remote assistance easy over the firewall. I used a USR 9106 wireless with all version of Astaro from 4.xx to currently 6.303. Let me know if further assistance required.

    Thank you Javed for your patience. I'm a developer new to networking. I installed my 2nd network card. On the installation ASTARO saw them both. I'm going to try to connect my external interface  into my dell firewall and then the internal interface into my dlink router. Not sure exactly what you mean by BRIDGE mode though I'll figure it out I'm sure.

    You have to find out what Protocol FIOS uses. If it uses Ethernet you can connect it to the Firewall. If it uses PPPoE or PPPoA you need a ADSL-Modem. Don't forget to configure you interface in the WebAdmin.
     
    Bridge-mode means that you don't need to seperate your network in two segments. Normaly you need to split your existing network IP-Addresses into two segments in order to put a firewall between them. In Bridgemode that is necessary. The best you read the Astaro user manual about this scenario.
