External Interface Trouble

I am having a problem getting my external interface.  I know you guys say the manual is great and all, but I find it rather vague.  I guess the problem is, it tells you to configure it to how you want it.  I don't know how I want it, I just want it to work!

I don't expect it to know what I want, but it would be nice if it did [:)] .  

My question is, I created an external interface on eth1.  It is for a cable modem.  If I take the cable, and plug it into my laptop (like I have right now, it works fine.  No router, no configuration.  Just works.  I take that same cable, plug it into eth1, turn on eth1 and it always says down as the status.  It can't get an IP.  

I have eth1 set up as a standard ethernet interface.  I have IP address, subnet mask and default gateway all set to Assign by DHCP.  The following are all off and MTU is 1500.  Am I missing something?

Edit I just tried connecting it to the lan side of a router, and I had to set the default gateway for it to get an IP from the router.  Why is that?

    One thing to keep in mind is that your cable company is going to expect to see the same MAC address as it's seen before. If you had that router plugged in at some point, then it will recognize it. Try unplugging the cable modem for about half an hour and then try again, making sure to reboot the firewall as well (it doesn't usually take that long, but that should be a safe amount of time).
