Recommended Hardware for Home Users?

I'm a home user (cable modem internet), and I dont have a great understanding of the hardware requirements of ASL.  What is everyone running?  I would never go back to a hardware NAT, but I'm worried that Im wasting electricity running mine 24/7 with the hardware I have:

Athlon 2400+, dual-channel 256mbx2, 60gb 7200rpm HD, 4port PCI NIC

Is anyone running a mini-ITX or something else air-cooled etc?

    For home use your processor is a bit of an over kill unless like me you run lots of time managed access and most of the proxies.

    If you can get something like PIII 800-celeron 1100 or ther abouts with 512mb of ram you will be laughing.

    For a while I had a celeron 1300 with 512 of ram but due to configuration issues I thought I needed more horsepower so I went back to my all in one box.

    It is a AMD 754 2800+ on a GA-K8VM800M motherboard.
    The reason I choose this mb is because it comes with an on-board display card. I currently have 768mb of ram of which 712mb is available to the system.
    I originally installed 3 NICs, but have since found out you can get away with 2. So next rebuild, which hopefully won't be for a while I will remove one NIC and further reduce the power.

    My system only has one fan and that is on the processor, I removed the floppy, not required. The powersupply is a fanless one.

    At the moment it sits at about 29c when idle ambient 19c and goes to about 32c under load. Temperature device is mounted on the heatsink.

    If the kids ever leave home I could down grade to the celeron again.

    My system is very quiet.

    I have similar specs and I'm running it in VMWare Server quite smoothly, but I have 2GB of single channel DDR400 RAM (but 512 is dedicated to the VM). This allows me to run other things in Windows. I also put it in one of those mini form factor cubes, which doesn't use as much power as a full tower (it gets by with a 225 watt power supply).

    I use a Small Form Factor Compaq Deskpro P3-500 MHz to run Astaro on at home. These machines are available used at low prices.

    I use a Via EPIA PD-10000 with 1GB Memory and a 80GB HD at Home... Runs good with all Proxys and Services on. Until a few Days ago i had only 512MB RAM... and a lot of swapping (up to 240MB!)... so Memory is a Key Factor. IIRC the 1Ghz Via CPU of this Board compares to 600-700Mhz of an Intel PIII, so it IS slow compared to your XP2400...

    I replaced the small 40mm Fan from the CPU Heatsink with a 80mm Fan (mounted to the internal Structure of the SFF Case). It is reasonable quiet, cool, and low on Power (in both Ways ;-) ).

    Stay away from older Via CPU´s (533 / 800 Mhz) for ASL6 because they do not Work! Have a look at the HCL and search the Forum. Other Users reportet Problems with the NIC Chipset on the Via ITX Boards, but i had no Problems so far...
