NIC wont initalize

First problem was that I couldn't get the system up and running. One of you guys helped me out with that. Now onto the second problem.....

It now boots up. Everything completes without errors during the bootup EXCEPT for "starting NIC initialization" It sits here for ever and doesn't get past it.

Well, it does, but after an hour or more.

Once past, I can login via the web, and do the normal stuff, but its so SLOW. I have websites that are more intensive than this running on less of a machine. Half the pages time out any how. 

Should I asssume its a problem with the nic? or perhaps its something i can change / configure to help.

I've reinstalled with all the options that i know of, classic, nosmb, and the normal one.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Could you please post more information about your NIC ??
    Manufacturer etc. would be fine.
    Which driver is loaded in /etc/modules.conf ?

    Hi,

    I have a linksys and a intel (i think) nic cards. All i really know is that they are both 10/100's.

    I can't get past the startup. It freezes on boot on the NIC part. Any ways to boot into something like a single user mode?

    Please post more about the hardware.  CPU/RAM/HARD DISK, Chipset.

    Sounds like a definate hardware or RAM issue.  Mine boots and fully up and running in 1-2 minutes.

    I have not any other issues with any other distro of linux. So I know all this stuff works (hardware). This is usually my test box for how I like something, so there has been numerous installs on here with no problems before. This is what is confusing me. 

    The more I think about it though, I think it perhaps could be a problem with the NIC cards. Machine is kind of old, but I think it should be okay. I'm going to try swapping out NICS to see if that helps. The only thing that I have changed is adding the one NIC. So I'll try taking that out and see how goes it.

    It's an intel 500. Not exactly sure what the chipset is exactly with out tearing open the box.

    Has about 128M of ram.

    Seagate 10G drive.

    Also, at this point, it never makes it past the NIC initialization. It sits there locked, can't reboot with the keyboard or anything.

    128MB RAM may be too low. 256MB or 512MB would be better.
    10GB HDD is pushing it too.

    See how you go with the NIC swapout.

    Okay. So I tried a simplier approach. I took out one of my NIC's. Plugged just one in. Still no go.

    I swapped them out, so the other nic was put in. Bam! Booted right up. 

    Problem, gotta configure the network on that other card. I guess I'll get looking that up now. Currently the ip address is 127.0.0.1. And this doesn't have the nice utility of netconfig that I'm so used to.

    okay. got another nic. popped it in. works fine. isnt slow. thanks for all the help though.
