ASL Appliance or ASL Software Recommendation

Looking to determine which ASL would best be suited for our network. 
Currently looking to upgrade our existing infrastructure. We push about 30megs a day of data with Aprox. 500 ip's. Trying to decide between a CISCO ASA or ASL with only IDS enabled.  Would the 220 be sufficient to use in this manor or would building own box and using ASL software be better.  The appliances seem to be more costs efficient.

    The appliances are cheaper, because they are easier for Astaro to support. They KNOW what the hardware is, so support costs are a lot less for them, at least this is my opinion.

    Plus the appliances are also a better option for that many users because it has unlimited IP address support.

    And as for the ability of the 220 it depends on the amount of concurrent users you have.  My rule of the thumb is about 150 concurrent users for just IPS.  If you want to go higher consider the 320.

    Thank you for your replies what is meant by "My rule of the thumb is about 150 concurrent users for just IPS"  What does the actual usability firewall throughput of the 220 become with IDS is enabled.

    About 20% - 25% of the packetfilter performance. So if the appliance can handle 200 MBit/s throughput (packetfilter) you will get around 50 Mbit/s performance with all IPS-Rules activated.
