can't get online !!

If NAT is disabled on the modem, then you need to be using a real IP (not a 192.168.x.x IP) on the ASL external interface.

Put your modem in bridging mode if you can, and configure ASL for DHCP or PPPoE depending on your ISP configuration.

i've actually tried this with NAT both on and off on the modem, to no avail  [:(] 

i get the logic of bridging mode - in that case i need to enter my PPPoA settings directly into ASL, is that correct ?

however, if i have a 'live' DSL connection on the internal interface of my modem (which i do have as i can plug another PC directly into the modem and get online at the same time as i cannot via ASL), and this interface is on the same subnet as the external ASL NIC then i should be able to get online with masquerading and packet filtering set as is -  no?

what eror messages you getting in your browser when you try to go online.

I suspect the issue is you haven't identified your DNS to the Astaro box.

i get a standard 'server not available' 404 error if i use IE and a 'server not found' if i use firefox

exactly what i get if i pull the plug out of the router

in my router settings are the DNS servers 212.x.y.z or whatever

if asl is 'pointed' at the router as a gateway, should it not therefore perform DNS lookups via that router ?

I find the interface software on the ASL very basic. I know it is meant for real networking people who know it all, but most SOHO routers use the information provided by the ISP. Astaro doesn't seem to do that and you need to add details like DNS addresses to your internal DHCP server so that it knows what to tell the clients. You can make the Astaro box the DNS server or the router. In your case it probably should be the internal IP address of your router.

This is my simple understanding of how to make it work without using the proxy. I suspect a DNS broadcast from a client should ben answered by the fastest DNS server on the network if a DNS addresses is not provided.

This all assumes you are allowing DNS through the filters.

got firefox working without proxy (which allowed firefox to work but broke everything else)

followed your suggestion and added 212.x.y.z DNS servers to DHCP server

and email up too now so i'm up and running

The learning curve to get a lot of stuff working in Astaro can be daunting the first time.  In fact I started to use Astaro twice and quit because of it. [:D]

But this time I stuck with it and now I can navigate around and setup a new system with relative ease.

Ok I fiddled and fiddled with this for days.  I combed through online posts everywhere seamingly forever. I'm a home user not a sys admin.
The bottom line is this: For whatever reason the Astaro does not get DNS from your cable modem!  You must specify the DNS servers you want to use!  I'm using OpenDNS. Once I entered a DNS server address, Bang! I was able to surf the net!

Is this Comcast residential by chance?

When I had them as an ISP, I noticed that I needed to go through a registration process first from a directly connected laptop/workstation, before it would allow use of their DNS servers.
