ADSL - what are the advantages of letting

the Astaro handle the ADSL interface rather than have the modem do the work?

I know of one advantage and that is the modem will reconnect quicker unless the Astaro is patched. Most SOHO modem/firewalls have an always on (connect) feature where as Astaro insists the standard between reconnect times be 15 minutes.

One disadvantage is you get double NAT'ed, which could explain a couple of issues my wife is having with a couple of websites.

Are there any other advantages or disadvantages?

    The primary advantage of running modem in bridge mode is that the modem then no longer handles NAT and connection forwarding.

    This is great when you have an underpowered modem as connection tracking is then offloaded from the modem to the firewall.

    Some modems will max out CPU usage especially with a lot of P2P traffic.
    So you can get speed/performance benefits.

    Double NAT'ing is an evil thing  that should be avoided.
    PS: You can force a PPPoE reconnect without waiting for 15 minutes by changing a parameter on that interface, saving, change it back save again, this will force a reconnect attempt.  (Yeah I know it's not elegant but it works).

     I have the configuration bit on the interface, but it doesn't always work.
    The reason I ask is that on speed tests with the modem/nat I get better throughput than with the firewall providing the ADSL interface.

    The modem is a new Zyxel 660 series.

    On a similar vein, what are the security issues with putting the firewall in bridging mode and having the modem do the NAT bit and maybe that includes the DHCP server bit as well?

    Important for me: can let the Astaro handle the DynDNS ! Don't need a DynDNS-Feature in the "Modem". And: if it's a "real Modem-only" Device don't have to configure it, just the Astaro...
    PortFwd and NAT issues also agreed!
