Low power firewall using V6.x on a Celeron

I have been trying to build a low power version of the Astaro firewall for home use with V6.x.
I finally found sufficient bits and pieces to make one up using a Celeron 533, 320mb of PC 100 ram  and IDE 20gb UDMA 66. Worked well on the test bench, statistics all showed up, the graphs were working well. The thing is a little slow to startup from power off.
Under load of 7 PCs (4 active) the graphs and statistics disappeared. I followed the instructions from on a thread in one of the other pages, no affect. At one stage duringthe nigh some graphs appeared for a short time, but no more. While TOP shows the CPU is idle after about 5 minutes from boot, I have trouble getting any reports or stats or graphs to find out what is happening. It swaps to about 120mb, which probably means I should add a stack of ram? TOP showed spare ram of 18mb.

I have a complex time management setup for a couple of users.
 Questions
1/. is a Celeron 533 capable of running a Astaro successfully the MB will go to a Celeron 1.1g if I can find one or a P3 equivalent.
2/. would 512mb be enough?

My current box is shown in my signature.

Interestingly the Celeron installed faster than the AMD 64 2800.

    That is a very minimal hardware platform.. even the lowly ASG 110/120 sports more CPU than that (MHz-wise, anyhow).  512Mb Is what I would consider to be what is normally needed for good performance (I substantially increased the performance of an ASG110 by upping the ram to 512MB).  I would go with a Celeron or AMD equivalent that's running at least 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, and whatever HD you can use.  otherwise, performance, particularly on large downloaded files, is going to suffer.  That's the same reason we almost always sell customers the ASG 220 as opposed to the 120 appliance, unless the added cost becomes an issue.

    Yes, you can use it. Look at my signature for the hardware used by me, it's low end and it also works. The WebAdmin interface is a little bit slow but virus protection, etc. are working well.

    I've just six users behind my ASG, imo 256 mb RAM are enough for a "low-end-box" but when all my users are accessing the internet, surf protection makes surfing a little bit slow.

    Thank you for the reply guys.

    I think I will have to stay with the existing box for the moment. I have  4 very active users who hammer the thing as much as possible and 2 of them are under quite complex time management rules.
    I do have AMD 2600 motherboard laying around, but they seem to generate more heat and user more power than my AMD 64 (754) 2800 that is why I have been loath to use them.
    Trying to find the power usage figures on the AMD site is nigh on impossible.

    I'm running Astaro on a system with a Duron 750 and 384MB RAM.

    Even under peak demand (4 workstation and VoIP) the load never reaches 1.  My memory utilization has yet to ever reach 300MB.

    I am using most of the proxies, the virus and web page management as well as the time managed filters. Chews the hell out of memory. The current machine runs at about 400mb with 64mb shared with the display card, so when I drop it back to 512mb it swaps a bit.

    I have asked my neighbour who is an IT manager if he has any old celeron/PIII that work at around the 1gb mark lying around.
