Mac Address

The easiest way to do it is to log in as root and run the following.

1) Bring down the interface: "ifconfig eth0 down"

2) Enter new MAC address: "ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:00:00:AA:AA:AA"

3) Bring up the interface: "ifconfig eth0 up"

Just replace the 'eth0' with the nic you want changed and of course the mac of your choice... however after a reboot it goes back to the hardware MAC.  I can't find the ethernet config files to make it permanent.

Tech support was very nice but ASG doesn't have that feature.  They also went into detail that by ifconfig'ing you would be running into stability issues since ASG still thinks it’s on the original MAC.  Just keep letting them know you need this feature as well... 

In the meantime I suggest looking into m0n0wall.  Although it is nothing like ASG in the feature set and security. But it does allow you to spoof the MAC and it's free.

Why not just contact the ISP and tell them you changed network cards in the machine?  Just get the new MAC address and tell them what it is.  If they won't do that, maybe it's time to change ISPs.  (I'm saying this assuming that the reason you want to spoof the MAC address is to connect to an ISP that has access controls based on MAC address.  Here, (I'm on Time Warner Cable) I can just power cycle the  cable modem / router after switching attached NICs, and it allows the first IP connection as the new MAC address.

Here are your exact steps to modify Astaro's boot sequence (NIC Initialization) for MAC spoofing:

1) log into the console as root (or ssh, then su to root)
2) type, "source /etc/profile"  (get yourself a nicer environment)
3) type, "vi /etc/init.d/initnics"
4) insert line, "ip link set eth1 address 00:90:27:99:4E:96 >/dev/null 2>&1", above the line, "/usr/local/bin/setitfhw.pl >/dev/null 2>&1"  (use your nic and mac address though)
5) save the script, and reboot
6) enjoy your cleanly hacked system

Yes this was not a problem when I was on Comcast Cable.  They tied the MAC to the cable modem.  But due to terrible service I have switched to DSL.

How I am setup:  I've disabled the routing on the DSL modem/router and turned it into a bridge.  But they still use the original MAC to authenticate the IP lease.  Personally my time is more precious than to sit on the phone with tech support in India and hope they understand.  I test out all flavors of routers so this is just not convenient each time I put new hardware in.  And I am sure there are many others would want this feature for other reasons besides flexibility and self service.

Correct me if I am wrong but Linux was meant to be about security, stability, and flexibility - so that is why I am looking for a product that accommodates those needs.

Dag is brilliant!  Not only did he find the config to make this permanent but his instructions work perfectly - I hope Astaro gives that man a spot in the partnership [:)]

Astaro techs could you confirm and bless this as a genuine mod?

Note that Dag's changes will probably get overwritten next time your system does an up2date.
Astaro techs are unlikely to comment on the modification since all modifications are "unsupported" and break your warranty.
