Server hardware choice

Hi!

I am thinking about installing ASL V6 on an IBM eServer x306 or an HP DL 320 G3.
Are there any known problems with each server or are both working well? Which one would your recommend?
I'd like to use SATA disks in RAID 1, and please tell me the fans regulate themselves WITHOUT installing some special software into ASL  [;)]

    FWIW, on the HP DL145 G2 with one dual-core 2.2GHz Opteron, the fans run in low-speed mode with both ASL 5 and 6.

    I think it's the BIOS that is controlling them.

    I'm running ASL6.105 on a HP Proliant DL380 with a Intel Xeon 2.8 GHZ, 2 GB of RAM, and a RAID5 with 72GB.  No issues with the hardware.

    This is a very timely question.

    I'm running on an x306 right now, using a single SATA drive and the built-in SATA controller.  On v5.x, this was a very stable platform.  However, on v6.x, I've had to rebuild the server from bare metal four times.

    The kernel log reports ATA errors frequently.  The supported hardware list indicates that an x306 with an Adaptec controller is unsupported, but later states that the on-board SATA controller is supported...I don't know what it is about the x306, but something is odd.

    I've run v6.xxx with and without the Adaptec SATA RAID controller 2940, with and without hyperthreading, all to no avail.

    I'm going to call IBM today to get a new motherboard and drives, as our newest rebuild (5 days old or so) reported ATA errors, and our executive reports are again showing fragmented graphs for concurrent connections.

    I tried an HP DL320 with Sata Raid.  Seemed like an economical choice but ASL does not support the sata controller with Raid enabled.  It installed fine with raid disabled.  Better check the hardware compatibility list and stick with SCSI raid.  I used an HP DL360 without issue.
