I've already searched the forum for "Epia" and "Via" but I didn't find any useful threads.
Maybe you can tell me, if  this  Via Epia will work.

I believe you need a Via C3 Nehemiah processor, Via C3 Samuel processors are not supported. It looks like the processor in the Via EPIA 5000 is not a Nehemiah.

EPIA should work just fine because that's what the Astaro hardware is about. It's nothing more than a EPIA box with ASL running on it.

We found out that the ASG 120 we recently bought on the hardware side is nothing more than a one of these emebedded systems with 3 ethernet ports, a 600 MHz C3 CPU, RAM and harddisk:

Not all Epia's are the same (it's a product line, sort of like "Pentium", without specifiying which model).

Thank you for the chart, but I've got another problem now.
I can't find the VIA ML6000EA mainboard with the VIA EDEN 667 MHz in your list, there's only a 600mhz one with a Samuel Core.

In  this offer the CPU is named as a "C3 Nehemiah" but is that right?
Maybe you can post a 100% working solution for max. 120€ because I can't find it.

Hi, first off  see the post I just made in  another thread. Secondly, ASL6 requires a Nehemiah (C3-2) processor. However, if you're willing to use ASL5, then you can go with the much cooler Eden CPU series. From what I've read, there is typically only one significant benefit for home usage of using ASL 6 compared to 5, namely a speed optimization of the web-ui.

So, you have to weight in the pros and cons of using ASL 5 and 6 together with what kind of HW you want to use (it's all about tradeoffs). FYI. ASL 5 still gets frequent updates, same as ASL6,    so both are viable in this regard.

So I can use  this EPIA System for V5 without problems?

According to the comments on that site, that is a C3 Nehemia, so I think it _should_ even work in ASL 6.

Does someone know, how long V5 gets still updated because I'm interested in buying  this EPIA (600 MHz VIA Eden ESP Samuel 2 ). 
And i need to know if the integrated NIC is supported, too.

I'd suggest getting a board with at least a C3 Nehemiah as they support the PII/PIII extensions and should be good with any new ASG version.  Seeing as your already using 6.10x, why step back to v5 to use hardware you haven't purchased yet?

BTW, if your concerned about noise with the 1.0ghz C3's there's ways to silence them, including using a larger fan, a zalman Fan Mate or swapping out the fansink for a larger heatsink.

Did you end up building the EPIA system?

If so, what hardware did you go with? Which version of Astaro?

I've been reading a number of the *itx site since reading that Astaro's own appliance that runs V6 is nothing more then a 600MHz EPIA system.
I would love to build something like that, it'd let me get rid of a lot of these old huge power slugging PII Dell's that my basement is cluttered with (which would make my wife happy). 

I was looking at cases - seems that you could go with a rack mount case and possibly even have enough room for two machines http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=3#p1152 (look further down the linked page, though the dual case they list doesn't have room for the dual-pci-nic you'd need for each).

I don't know much, obviously, about the mini-itx stuff. If anyone has any motherboard recommendations/processor/case or even vendor recommendations for someone in the US I'd love to hear about it.

I actually ended up building two, one for me & one for my parents.  

1x PD10000 1.0ghz, 1.0GB Ram, 30GB 2.5" HDD, Intel Dual Port PCI Gigabit  (both onboard lan disabled), Travla C137 90w mini-ITX case, 3-pin fan "Y" adapter, 1-fanmate rheostat.

1x SP13000 1.3ghz, 1.0GB Ram, 20GB 3.5" HDD, onboard ViaVT6102 (Rhine II) ethernet, 3Com 3C905C-TX PCI ethernet, Travla C137 90w mini-ITX case, 3-pin fan "Y" adapter, 1-fanmate rheostat.

Both machines work great and with the zalhman fanmate & "Y" adapter, I've got both fans turned down pretty good as Astaro doesn't tax the CPU much, so they're pretty quiet (barely audible).  I've got both machines currently running Astaro v6.201 and they're excellent.  One tiny quirk was the SP13000 doesn't like to restart (via WebAdmin) unless there is a keyboard plugged into it (works 100% if a keyboard is present).  Trying to find one of those tiny phantom PS2 keyboard plugs that tricks the system into thinking there's a keyboard.  Maybe I've got some setting messed up in the bios as well.

Overall, very happy with both machines and I too replaced PII/PIII monsters with these little guys.

What about the new VIA C7 processors and the Phylon 7F2WE motherboards. 
The C7s should have all the same compatibility of the C3s, shouldn't they?
Phylon also makes a 3 port gigabit ethernet daughtercard.
