HP DL360 and RAID

From reading the HCL for V6 and scouring the posts here it appears that using RAID with Security Manager is an iffy, at best, prospect. I'm getting ready to purchase a new DL360 to replace the low end server we've been running on. I was going to spec a Smart Array 641 controller with 2 SCSI drives to ensure redundancy. Every Server I have runs at least RAID1 and most RAID5 and I don't want to skimp in this case. Has anyone used this config with success? Am I wasting money on a RAID controller that won't get used?   TIA

    never had any problems with linux and any compaq/hp proliant server. though i never used these servers to run a asl.

    Well, since the 6i controllers are on the HCL, why don't you use that?

    I see the legend:     * = This Server uses Software Raid. Astaro Security Linux can not handle
        this special kind of emulated Raid. In this case, Astaro Security Linux 
        will detect two Harddrives and will use only the first one. 

    and I notice that both DL360's on the list have the " * " next to it. Maybe I'm not reading it right?

    We have a dl585 with the 5i raid card and it is definitely hardware raid.

    We're not running Linux on it though (yet), so I don't know too much else other than HP does sell them with RedHat EL.

    The HCL isn't very clear, but I think they mean they tested with 2 72gb drives.

    it IS Hardware Raid...

    we are running ASL 5 on a DL 360 G3 with mirrored Disks without a Problem.

    Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the help. Now...   which RAID controller are you using successfully? Would I be OK using the Smart Array 6i Plus integrated controller, or would I be better off adding something like a SmartArray 642? And, not to cloud the issue but is there much to be gained by adding a second processor?

    ASL really isn't very disk intensive, so you really shouldn't worry about disk IO speed that much.

    The only reason I'd start to worry about it is if you were running a HUGE squid cache for thousands of simultaneous users.

    IIRC, the RAID processors only make a big difference with RAID 5, as they speed up the CRC computations.
    Mirroring needs no CRCs.

    FWIW, I just installed the Novell branded ASL (Security Manager) on a DL360 G1 with a pair of 18.2 Ultra-3 drives configured for RAID-1. As this is a hardware-based RAID solution, the OS sees only one 18.2GB drive. No problems with the install or after several restarts.

    I also have dual CPUs. Interestingly enough, while the installer detected the pair of CPUs, the smp (or even the "classic") kernel options were not available (not on the disk - I checked!), so I just let it install. I have no idea right now whether it's utilizing both CPUs or just one.
