astaro 6.1 crash on install

i;m trying to install 6.1 on a dual P2 450ghz 1GB RAM system with 120GB IDE HDD.  

It performs:
Verifying package checksums..... OOK
Partitioning the hard disk...........OK
formating swap......................OK
formatting root.....

OOPS:  0000 [#1]
...
...

EIP is at __block_writ4e_full_page+
in process mkfs.ext3

other linux installs have went fine on this system, and the ISO is good as i did a test install in vmware

    forget it.  i tried 2.4 and 2.6 linux kernels, and a windows server 2003 CD.  

    It seems that is it able to write partition tables, but not format/write data to the drive.

    Odd, since i used a secure wipe utility to wipe the HDD and it ran successfully.

    I guess it must have been an error in the onboard IDE controller.  Replacing the motherboard and sapping out the components worked great
