Swap size and usage?

I am running V6.100.
With all proxies enabled, both anti virii programs etc running. Also extensive (for a home user) time managed access in both filter and proxy. The internet is a 512/128 ADSL connection.

Initially installed 1gb of memory. After watching the stats for a while, memory never went above 400mb, so to reduce heat and power I removed 512mb. [:O]

With 512mb installed, memory usage never went over 400mb, swap usage very quickly went to 200mb. So I added 256mb. [:S]
With approx 700mb, memory usage still doesn't go over 400mb usually, but swap is slowly growing. About 20mb at the moment.

So howe do you guys and gals with 256 and 512mb machines get away without affecting your performance or having large amounts of swap. [:S]

Velvet Fog or William provided away of reducing memory usage by forcing the HTTP cache onto hard disk.

    Linux likes to swap.

    Swap is not necessarily bad.

    that is part of what I am trying to determine, is it swap or is it outside my network. Some days everything is just plain slow and other days it is just web surfing, but it is not consistent.

    I know when my kids play wow every thing slows down except their game. I can't find any reason for it. It is not as if I don't have enough horsepower in the firewall. I have 4 users, but up to 7 boxes requiring www access. Some very infrequently so as not to matter or have any affect, every so often for NTP update.

    I was also interested how the folks with smaller main memory get a long.

    OK.

    I'm only running with 256MB, but I don't use the HTTP or SMTP proxies, and I have the IPS only scan some of my traffic.

    I was noticing increased latencies with the IPS in the past.
