How much swap usage?

Unless you've got a lot of users or other traffic, it looks like that should be fine. I would expect some swap, but not a lot (10s of MBs). 

Just for comparison, at home I'm running 5.205 on an Athlon 650 with 384MB of PC133. VP, IDS, SurfProtection, SMTP, POP3, and DNS proxies. Packet filter rules are fairly limited (most inbound problems are stopped at the router). CPU load is usually arround 0.1, memory usage averages 230MB, and swap averages 38MB (about 10% of physical memory). Originally I only had 128MB of ram in the machine (not really enough) and the swap was arround 200MB (a problem, even though the system still ran OK - just slow). 

Yesterday I was watching the shuttle launch via RealVideo, which caused a bit of a spike in network traffic, but didn't really change the CPU/RAM/Swap numbers. When I tested V6 on the same hardware, it's memory and swap usage was a bit lower.

As long as the swap usage doesn't get to be a significant fraction of the physical memory, I wouldn't worry about it.

I am running now with about .2 CPU and 384MB RAM with 25 - 30MB of swap. I use HTTP Proxy with AV, Spyware and content filtering. POP3 proxy with AV and Spam. SOCKS v4 and about 8 packet filters.IPS and DNS Proxy are enabled as well. Should I put a basic packet filtering router in front of my Astaro box? Is my swap usage too much? Thanks for all the help.

The swap usage is minor (~6% of physical ram), and the system is only using 75% of it's available RAM. Seems fine. A faster CPU might speed up AV scanning, but a load average of .2 is OK.

You could put a router in front of it, but ASL is going to give you better control over things than any of the less expensive routers is going to. I've got a Cisco 678 DSL router, but all it really does is forward the specified open ports to ASL. Most ports are closed, so ASL never sees any traffic on them, which may keep the logs from getting cluttered if someone portscans me, which could be seen as a plus.

the 2.4.x kernels are a bit swappy in nature but yours is fine.  As long as you do not approach say 175 megs or so in constitent swap usage i would not be concerned.  You may get hte occasional spike depending on the features you are running.  However, if you want to reduce the http proxie's ram usage STF for my squid memory tweaks.  These apply to v4-5.  For v6 I'll be posting the slightly modified version..[:)]
