5.204 halting all the time

Have you tested the hardware recently for problems?  Running memtest for a few hours will tell you if you've got flaky memory or CPU.

first, autodetect sould normally detect (like the name says :-)) any new nic. Are there any log-entrys concerning the system halts?

Faulty memory normaly leads to a kernel panic, well a faulty CPU dosent trigger a panic always, but just stop responding. 

Do you use the Virus Scanning, Proxy ...?

Thanks for the reply. I know what autodetect means :-), but I remember having seen posts concerning problems adding another NIC after installation. I need to be prepared.

I don't think It's related to faulty memory and/or CPU, as the machine can run without problems for days, as long the situations as decribed in my initial post aren't met. I can reproduce the problem as often I want, just by doing certain actions on the connected client.

I can't see anything in the logs, and certainly don't have a kernel panic. 

I don't use virus-scanning (home-license). the proxys are used

PS: It would be great to know what todo if somehow another NIC wouldn't be recognized -- i.e which conf-files to be edited by hand

What do you mean it's a "dell disease"? 

Can you elaborate on what exactly you found?
