astaro and compact flash

I'm just curious in how its done because,  I'm sure if you purchase an astaro appliance you will get astaro thats installed on compact flash not a hard drive.  Most vendors such as cisco, sonicwall, or watchguard don't use hard drives in there appliance's I don't see why astaro should be any different.

uhh..wrong.  I have evaluted the ASG and most assuredly they have hard drives in them.

Thats different most appliances I've seen use compact flash. Flash is just less prone to problems over the long haul than hard drives.

I have yet to see an appliance that runs totally off flash.  Could you point some out?

I have not yet seen one that totally runs off of flash either. They run off of flash along with the ram thats installed on the firewall. My point is compact flash is more stable and last longer than hard drives. Why do you think pixes can run for years on end without any problems.

NOt neccesarily true.  I ahve serveral drives here that are more than 5 years old that have run and continue to run w/o issue.   Flash has limited lifespans..you can only read and write to a cell so many times.  Just for my information..what is a pixe?

I think he is referring to Cisco PIX firewalls. I have run many a firewall that supports compact flash. IPCOP and Monowall to name a few. Most of the heavy writing like proxying and logs are written to a ram disk. In fact in IPcop documentation they state that the CF card would last 10 years. However Astaro has become too bloated to be used in a system with a CF card or a solid state drive.

FWIW, Apple is talking about putting 18GB flash drives in upcoming notebooks, instead of a HD, so apparently the prices must be dropping fast.

Cisco equipment store program and config on flash. On powerup it is transferred to memory. Once running the flash isn't used other than when you save your running config back to pickup on the next reload.

Just a few questions:

Who can show me Virus scanning gateway, that handles HTTP/POP3/SMTP and is running completly from flash and ram without a harddisk?
(And please don't tell my Fortinet, if our maximum object size we scan for viruses is  limited to max 10MB and we only handle  a few compression algorithms, we could do this too).

How long can you store your logfiles on a cisco pix?

Does checkpoint firewall itself (not the reporting suite) generate detailed reporting information like Astaro and sends it via email?

Does Sonichwall or Fortinet support Spam Email quarantine and Email queuing?

Does Watchguard offer a caching HTTP proxy?


Those and more are the reasons why we decided to integrate a harddisk into our product. 
The advantage of those advanced features is far bigger than the possible drawback of having a component which more likly to fail sooner.

We had a system in the field that was running ASL 1.8 continously (no reboot) for appr. 4 1/4 years, than they upgraded to ASL V5.
