astaro is getting to bloated

Astaro seems like its getting to heavy. What I mean by that is I loaded up v5 on a p3 1 gigahertz with 512 ram. I access the webgui and the system seemed rather sluggish. I remember loading asl version 4 on a p2 233 with 128 megs of ram and it was fast as hell. At this pace if one decided to deploy astaro in a business environment you might as well get a box with dual zeons and 3 to 4 gigs of ram. IMO the astaro developers need to trim the product down or they need to start releasing multiple products and stop trying to put everything in one product.

    Hi,

    running two of our testing equipment on Compaq Deskpro with 700 MHz 256 MB Ram, V5.203 without any speed trouble. Even have one V6 Beta on a Deskpro 6000 with 333 MHz and 256 MB Ram.
    Try the console, and execute top. There you should see, how much power is used by the hyperdyper deamon.

    I agree.
    I tend to think not only performance has become an issue but system stability.   Basic functions fail too often or are problematic.

    For instance: viewing log queries in either IE or Firefox causes these browsers to consume enormous amounts of memory resources creating unstable client machines and/or browser failuers. 

    This is basic functionality.

    Request for feature:  NO MORE FEATURES
    (until stability and performance are restored)

    Yep. I've brought this up since the 5.0 betas...
    The html generated doesn't have newlines (\n or \r\n) at the end of each line of data, and Mozilla doesn't like this. IE doesn't seem to care.
    Astaro eventually fixed it for some cases, but there are still many times when it still happens.

    Yes, going to ASL v5 from v4 seems to have required a large jump in processor resources for the web interface.  What used to be a snappy interface on a pretty fast machine (AMD XP 2800+, 1GB memory) turned into an interface which is just OK.

    On lesser hardware the delay between page responses gets very annoying.

    BTW, when watching top through the console and using the web interface, the primary users of CPU are the following processes:

    confd
    index.fpl
    mdw_daemon.pl (seems to jump up every now and then and use CPU for 30 seconds or so)

    confd is a hog.  That is the database engine.  All configuration is done through confd.

    Well I miss asl version 4 hopefully they can trim future products down to perform as fast as v4. I still play with astaro but right now I'm installing monowall for my clients its not as feature rich as astaro but it is what it is a great stateful inspection firewall. I can also deploy my client servers with ide to compact flash adapters.

    i use ASL 5.203 on a IBM ThinClient with a 233MHZ Mobile CPU and 128MB of RAM. I installed a 2.5 inch Notebook Harddrive an this box runs since DEC04 without any problems. OK, the WebGUI is a little bit slow, but not on all functions. Don't think i'm using an easy config, also running VPN, IDS and many others... but it runs!!! 
    totaly happy.

    but its right, that each new release is a slower than an older. in office ok, but i don't see any reason why I should use a 2GHz machine just for firewalling?

    Hi,

    thats the curse of getting more and more features into the box. 

    Last test with 5.1XX was on dual Opteron with 2 Gig RAM.
    was teste in "normal" corp. network configuration.

    pure packetfilter 950 MBit/s
    with vpn 200 - 300 Mbit/s
    with vpn and ips 100 - 150 MBit/s
    proxy was also around 200 - 250 MBit/s

    i don't understand where's the problem.


    if you don't need some features, just disable them.
    if you don't want to run a 2ghz machine you would need more machines to have the protection which asl provides in one machine. so where is the diference?
