Modem advise, please

Hello,

We are on the process of opening a developpement shop in Moldova and we would like to get the people there an Astaro Firewall.

However, it is sometime difficult to properly advise people when they are thousands of km away, speaks a different language and lake the necessary expertise.

So, since I myself also lake most expecrience with using PPPoE modems, I would like to ask for a recommandation about a modem that is both easy to find and works well with Astaro.

I would infinitely prefere to use a router but I was assigned a single permanent IP by the provider and I need to setup a site-to-site VPN so using a double-NAT strategy is probably out of question.

Anyone could recommand a modem or two ? The more recommandation the better since it's likely they will have problem getting a specific model.

    PPPoE is a high level connection and authentication scheme that runs over Ethernet, and it operates independently of the modem brand being used for the underlying basic ADSL connectivity. Since this is an ADSL connection you are setting up, your best bet is to find out which ADSL modems are being recommended or supplied by the local phone company providing the ADSL circuit. Then use the same type for your connection. That way, if there are any connectivity problems, at least you are using an ADSL modem that the local phone company  supports and is familiar with.

    Unfortunately, the telco there is really, really crappy. All they propose is USB modems and a single model with that: A Zixel Omni ASDL USB EE which is, apparently, a model that is only distibuted in  the eastern europe. As such, it's is impossible to use it with Astaro. They also offer a wireless router is requested but that won't help me much [;)]

    Anyway, the staff there found something that might just work: a DLink DSL-500T Modem/router. Anyone got experience with this stuff ?

    Any ethernet ADSL modem should work.

    I use a Zyxel 660R.
    Most support PPPoE or PPPoA.  Should work with your ISP though you may have to manually edit some settings on the modem.

    Why not buy one and ship it to them?

    We have a customer at geneva that use the same provider and a astaro firewall wit the NetGear WG 602 series router and it works fine sience 1 year

    [/ QUOTE ]I have a D-Link DSL-300I modem. I am not ordinarily that fond of D-Link gear, but the DSL-300I is what my phone company supplied me with four years ago, when I switched to ADSL, and it has worked fine ever since I hooked it up. Being just an ADSL modem, with nothing else included,  it has no configuration or user settings, just the usual idiot lights on the front. 

    I would imagine that the DSL modem circuitry in both the DSL-500T modem/router and in the DSL-300I modem are quite similar, probably using the same chipset, since they are both D-Link products.

    Mind you, I don't live all that far away from my telephone exchange. The true test of an ADSL modem is how it performs on lines that are noisy, or lines that are extra long.

    Tank you, everyone. We have the modem working in bridged mode now and the VN is now working as well.
