AOL doesn't connect behind firewall

I did a bit of poking around on the net and found a list of ports that had to be open along with a caveat that if you open these ports AOL is not responsible.  (Or something along that line).  I tried to create a service called AOL with TCP and UDP ports open like below:

1024:65538 5190:5193

And changed my packet filter rules to "any".  It didn't work.

They also mentioned that port 443 should be open, which it already is. Then they say something about ICMP type 3 code 4 fragmentation needed.  

Interestingly, I couldn't even load the AOL homepage in my browser.  And I had the Astaro page open; it hung up when I tried to log in.

So, I hate to bother you all with AOL junk but it's the joy I live with so I thought I'd spread it around.  If I find an answer before someone posts it, I'll return to here and let you know what I have discovered.

PS on a side note, are there any settings that you change that require you to restart a service?  It's not unheard of in Linux, as you know.

no when you make a change hte appropriate service is modified and/or restarted.  

Take the firewall to its basics.  put source as internal networks, service nay, desitination any, allow.  Turn off http proxy.  Make sure AOL is set for tcp/ip or LAN.  Make sure you have the dns proxy setup.  make sure aol is using hte astaro box as your gateway.
