Enabling external NIC kills communications

If there is a quick howto on cable modem connections that might save some time.

I have the following setup...

cable modem
        |
router (192.168.0.1)
        |
Astaro box external (192.168.0.201)
        |
   Switch (ALSO CONNECTED TO ROUTER)
       |
Other LAN computers, including WebAdmin box internal NIC(192.168.0.200)

My problem is that if the external NIC is active, I can no longer communicate with the Astaro box.  I have tried diconnecting the switch from the router and the same thing happens.

Anyone have any ideas?

    [/ QUOTE ]You can not use the 192.168.0 subnet on both your ASL box  interfaces. Routing only works when the network numbers used to name each subnet are different from each other. You need to learn how IP addressing and routing works.

    With your ASL box in place, you don't really need the 4-port router that you have connected between the ASL box and the cable modem. My advice is to remove it.

    Thanks, AMros & VelvetFog.

    It makes sense that you can't route between the same subnet.  

    So what if I pull the router out of the circuit and set the external NIC to DHCP?  Should that get this fixed?  Or do I have to do something else...?

    That would be the recommended approach.
