HW reqs for http&pop3 proxy with filtering

hi

i'm using ASL on a 266Mhz, 128MB, 20GB machine. I know, not enough to fit the minumum requiremnts... :-)
i have a 2mbit connection to the web.

So i plan to use the http proxy and the pop3 proxy to cache files and check the traffic.virus and spamprotection...

what will you say??? will i kill my bandwith, with this HW specs, stupid idea to use the proxies or is it the greates idea you ever heard?

Someone else out there, with HW like this?

    I would think the virus scanning would kill the CPU. These 2 proxies are intensive.  Your hardware would work for packet filtering but not these proxies. Buy a P4 computer for $400. It will save you lots of headaches. 
    P4 with 512 MB RAM  would be my recomendation

    look at my specs below.  This machine runs v4 sweet as sugar and runs v5 nicely as well.  With v5 installed(with a different larger hdd) i can run a/v, ips, dns, http proxy w/content filter, packet filtering, several NAT rules, smtp proxy on a 3 megabit dsl line.  It gets pokey in webadmin but otherwise runs fine.  Your cpu is too low any version of ASL and RAM really needs to be 256 megs.  The 20 gig is what i use for v5.

    That hardware CAN be used for ipcop(ipcop.org) but it has much less features natively than ASl.  The upside is you can add a/v into ipcop.  Contact me via e-mail or pm if you want to do something like that.  For ASL you need at least p-2 400 and 256 megs ram.

    [/ QUOTE ]You can run ASL v3 or v4 just fine on hardware like that, but if you want to run the current ASL v5.2, you'll need a faster computer with more RAM. Your 20 GB hard drive is OK to use, but you'll have to replace the rest.
