Does Astaro do mostly Random reads or Sequential?

I'm setting up a new Areca Raid controller and one of the parameters I can set is the stripe size for each block written to the hard drives. I can select these sizes: 4K, 8K, 16K, 32K, 64K, or 128K. If Astaro does more "random" reads then it is my understanding that I should select a smaller stripe size. If Astaro does mostly sequential reads then I should use a bigger stripe size.

Of course this may be a moot point if this Areca Raid card will not work with Astaro, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It comes with all the standard Linux based drivers much like 3Ware raid cards do, so we'll see! 

Anyway, I'm guessing Astaro does mostly random reads, anyone know for sure??

    If you are running a RAID controller in stripe mode, that means you are using RAID0, which gives you roughly double the disk space, twice as fast access, and one half the reliability of a single disk drive.

    It seems rather pointless to install a RAID0 based disk system on a firewall. ASL only writes log files and squid proxy cache data to disk, so RAID0 striping is an overkill. You would be better off moving your raid controller card and matched disk pair over to a Windows workstation, where you could put it to good use.

    If you were using RAID1 (mirroring) in your ASL box, I could understand the use of a raid system, since you would be providing enhanced reliability, protecting the firewall against a single disk drive failure. In mission critical, high reliability installations, the use of RAID1 would be prudent.

    I simply fail to see the point in implementing  RAID0 (striping) on a firewall box. I suggest that you ought to rethink this.

    I've been out on vacation until today. I will be using Raid 1 (mirroring), sorry I forgot to mention. In any case, unlike the 3Ware controller the ARECA controller will not work with Astaro, as it needs to be able to load the drivers at the Red Hat Linux boot prompt. Which of course Astaro will not allow. Oh well, it was worth a try. I'll just send it back and use the 3Ware sata controller which a few here have had success with.
