High-Availability and switch/NIC failure?

Is it possible in a HA setup to use NIC-teaming to guard against NIC/cable/switch failure? Will asl see a failed network link on the internal interface and automatically trigger failover to the spare machine?

    Astaro provides a feature called "uplink failover". It's used to backup failures of the internet service provider. So there is one primary (active)  line and a secondary (passive) line. BUT primary and secondary line have to be on different subnets. That a limitation which prevents you from using the feature for NIC/cable/switch failover, because this one would be in the same subnets.

    I'm not too worried about upstream as we have that reliably covered. I'm more worried that if i have the hot fw up it won't realise that the switch it is connected to internally has gone away. Do I need to think about routing the heartbeat over the switch in question?
