HCL lacking current Dell & HP servers

Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading our ASL 3.x box (Dell 350, 800MHz pIII) to something which will run 5.x w/ 3-6Mbits HTTP traffic on our web servers, with IPS & full accounting, and possibly a low-traffic, occasional use, VPN.

I've noticed none of the Dell servers in the HCL are currently available.

Need a 1U box, so for Dell, that currently means one of the following:
PE1850 (too expensive)
PE SC1425 (SATA, 1 or 2 Xeons)(hyperthreading?)(no nics??)
PE750 (SATA, 1 P4 CPU)

Or, HP:
DL140 (Dual Xeon)(This is on HCL)
DL145 (Dual Opteron, IDE/ATA100)
DL320 (IDE/ATA 100, P4)
DL360 w/ SATA (1-2 Xeons)

Anyone tried any of these servers?

Any feeling as to which is faster for ASL:
Dual Opteron
or
Dual Xeon w/ HT
?

I know the Opteron is generally faster at a lot of things but dunno about ASL, esp compared to Dual + HT.

    We use PE750 (SATA, 1 P4 CPU) and this seems to work.

    Anyone using the Dell PE SC1425 or the HP DL145 or DL320??

    We need to upgrade our firewall in the next week or two... Not sure if the Delll 750 is fast enough, and the HPs are cheaper.

    Maybe we'll go with the DL140 as it's on the HCL.

    I recently installed Astaro 5.x on a new Dell Poweredge 800 (with PERC4 raid controller and Hyperthreading) and it works great.  Sometimes if a specific machine isn't on the HCL, you can look at the individual parts used in the machine and compare those to the list.

    I personally wouldn't hesitate to install Astaro on one of the SC value line servers, either.  I'm sure it would be fine.  I was initially considering one of those instead of the 800, simply because the SC line is cheaper.  However, the 800 has hot swappable drives for the raid array, and the SC line does not.  (I'm lazy, and like the idea of hot swap raid arrays.)  [:)]

    We're trying to find a 1U rack-mount box... 

    Astaro tells me the Dell's with SATA used to work in compatibility mode, but Dell has removed compatibility mode from recent BIOS updates. [:(]

    We're probably going to get one of the HP's.
    Maybe the DL145, as Opterons are very fast, and it supports dual CPUs.

    We just received a PowerEdge 2850 (2U) with "PERC4 Embedded Integrated" (PERC 4E/DI). ASL 5.2 isn't recognizing the controller, though. Any thoughts/recommendations?

    We ended up going with the HP DL145, which is working great.

    I'd suggest contacting Astaro support and asking if they can give you a driver module for that adapter.

    You might also try the onboard IDE or SATA card.
    Some Dells have an option to set the SATA contollers into "compatiblilty mode", which might work. I've heard Dell has been removing that option in BIOS updates though.
