WLAN Wireless setup with MA301 MA401 combo

PLX cards won't be autodetected, so try adding it into modules.conf.

BTW, you didn't mention the brand of your cards.

Sorry, they were Netgear, PCMCIA/PCI card MA301 MA401 combo kit.

I'm not having much fun though. I added eth1 into modules.conf with the PLX driver. Then I get some strange stuff displayed in the detected Hardware List of interfaces.

Instead of my eth0 displaying the correct network card, it calls itself the PLX card, and the second entry is the Wlan0 interface.

But even though the display is a bit messed up it the eth0 is working as the network card and nothing to do with the wireless kit. (I know because I can get to it via crossover cable to the Lan card)

So I've got eth0 working for admin access via crossover cable, and ASL says that there is a WLAN card, but no matter how I configure the WLAN card my D-Link wireless router won't see it.

On the PCMCIA wireless adaptor the "connection" light is flashing but I'm not sure whether that means it has a signal or not.  [:S]

So I think I need to take things a bit slower, remove the hardware from the ASL box and test it works in a windows box first then retrace my steps.

Wish there was an easy way to get this wireless stuff working its more frustrating than Exchange server [:)]

One other question, all the WEP settings I have ever seen on routers or windows use 56bit or 128bit keys, but ASL has 40bit or 104bit keys.

Are they the same, i.e. could a 128bit key on a router be entered as a 104bit key in Astaro?

56bit keys are really 40bit, and etc...
Different (marketingspeak) names for the same thing.

BTW, I had to update the flashrom on my DLink PrismII card before using it, but I am using it as an access point.

Well, I'm getting to the end of my rope on this one.

I took the PCMCIA card out of the ASL and tried it in my laptop running XP and that worked fine connecting to the AP.

I think its something to do with the MA301 PCI interface card thats causing the problem, but its such a slow process trying to get any of it to work and you do feel like you are running blind most of the time. [:(]

I've found out that a "flashing" light means its searching for a connection and a steady light means its found one.

I'm just worried that when I add the entry to /etc/modules.conf and boot up I lose my eth0 entry in ASL, or rather the eth0 entry becomes the MA401 but it still works as the internal ethernet card. [:S]

That does seem odd.

I'm not sure what else to say, other than try Google to see if you can find any linux support/advice for that card.

I don't know what's wrong with eth2's description... It is also an Intel... it's working fine though (DMZ)
/proc/pci shows 3 Intel Nics and one "network controller"
so maybe Biffa's problem is related to what I'm seeing?

TBH I gave up in the end. Sorry guys. I just ended up putting the AP on the network card and doing it that way.
