Very high system load...

Hi all,

I have been using ASL for almost 3 years now, and I love it. It works very good for me. I use it at home (free 10-user Office licence) for, well, 8-10 computers... I used ASL V.3 for quite some time on an old P166 computer, which ran very smoothly.

But now I installed ASL V.5.100 on another machine, which is a P-II 333, 128MB RAM, 6.5GB disk, and now I am running into some issues:
-The system load is VERY high: constant 7.5! CPU is at 100% usage constantly when reading top. Different processes however:  confd, mdw_deamon, get_conf
-I get an e-mail every hour saying that "alicd" is not running, restarting. I have read the other posts about this issue, but the tips didn't work for me (resetting IP-counter, installing V5.100)

Can anyone help me? Or is my system just too slow to run ASL V.5 (hope not)

BTW, the firewall functions just fine. Internet traffic is nog slown down at all  [:)]

    Check if the MTU settings of your interfaces are set correctly. If in doubt, set them to their default-values. I had exactly the same symptoms you describe and were caused by a bad MTU value of an interface that's connected to a DSL router.

    Unfortunately, I think your hardware is under-spec for v5.100 and will have to be upgraded/replaced.
    (try increasing your RAM to 256MB first, if that doesn't help a lot, replace the processor or upgrade the box)

    Hmm, hardware under-spec... That'll cost me money, thanx a lot  [;)]h the roof... 

    I have the feeling it is somehow connected to the "alicd" process not running... Any ideas??

    Look  here for the specs and even a hardware calculator.

    I had the 'alicd' problem on a production machine but following the IP reset instructions cleared it. My home unit is a PIII-550 which had to be purchased for V5 because the old PII-233 was deathly slow. Even the 'new' 550 needs 256MB to be reasonably responsive - with 128MB the hard drive was active all the time (swap I guess).

    I guess not. The alicd problem is probably caused by the high system load. Once I had my MTU problem solved and the CPU usage went down I was able to make alicd happy again by resetting the IP counter, but not before.

    Take a look at the file /tmp/mdwdebug.log to see if you can find anything odd that might give a hint.

    Thanx, looking at the file gives some clue:

    updating interface External...
    OK
    :: Reconfigure Logging..done
    RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument
    ####################################################

    And these messages are flooding the /tmp/mdwdebug.log every 5 seconds... I have no idea what they mean, but I suspect some problem with the external interface?? I will investigate the issue somewhat further, before I go out and buy new hardware...

    Ok, this thing just got stranger... After 2 days running the systemload drops to normal levels (0.2 continously), withouw me meaking ant changes... And this is repeatable, because after a  reboot the exact same thing happened: 2 days high load (7.5), and suddenly dropping to low levels.
    I have no idea what can be causing this behaviour  [:S]
    Does anybody have a clue? Is there a 2-day timeout on some triggers?

    And the "alicd" process is still not running, resetting the IP-counters does not help. 
    Strange bevaviuor from a otherwise very stable and reliable product
