I'm in upgrade mode for next year as well. Doing some research this is what I came up with. 
I like Dell solutions as well, however currently ASL does not have drivers for onboard SATA. So I'm looking at a 3Ware Sata card, in particular the 9500s-4lp ($325 total from NewEgg.com) or the 8006-2LP ($145) to go in a Dell SC420. Dell currently has the SC420 for $229 (completely stripped down). 
I customized it and here is what I came up with for $757 :
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, 3.6GHz,1MB Cache,800MHz FSB, EM64T
256MB DDR2, 400MHz,1X256, Single Ranked DIMMs (which I will likely replace with Corsair memory)
48X, Compact Disk Drive, 680M I, Half Height, Black, for PowerEdge SC
No keyboard, mouse, etc.
3 year basic support plan
No disaster recovery option
160GB SATA Hard drive (extra $60). I know 160GB is overkill, but I always like to leave room to grow. [;)]
No backup or other accessories
Onboard NIC.

So considering I want a mirrored raid config. I'm adding $325 for the faster 3ware card (even though it has 4 ports and you only need 2 for mirroring). Another $100 for a second 160 GB SATA drive. $275 for 1 GB of some quality Corsair Value Select RAM (VS1GBKIT533D2). Throw in another $100 for 2 more quality NICs (for a total of 3 NICs including onboard NIC). With the SC 420 having 4 PCI slots, I'd be using 1 for the 3ware SATA controller, and 2 for the additional NICs, leaving one open PCI slot.

So the approximate total for this config is $1557. You of course could bring this price down by going with the lesser 3ware card, slower proccessor, cheaper RAM, smaller hard drives. 
For example, if you went with 2.8GHz proccessor, 512MB RAM, 2 port 8006-2LP 3ware SATA card, and dual 80GB hard drives, you could drop the price down to about $900!  [:)]

So unless something else better comes along that is what I'm budgeting for in the upcoming year. Dell always has specials like this, so I don't feel like I have to pull the trigger on this particular deal!

What about the Dell 1750?  With that you can have the option of Dual CPU's and the SCSI/RAID is supported by ASL.

In my co-location environment we use two 1750's (configured with the ASL HA option) with 2.5GB RAM, RAID1, dual Xeons and they barely break a sweat.  Highly recommended.

No doubt the 1750 would be a better solution, but correct me if I'm wrong, at a much higher cost. Especially when you start using SCSI drives and SCSI raid controllers. 
Most people are running ASL on off-market equipment with a 1 Ghz CPU or less and with 512 MB or less of ram, with no problems whatsoever. Currently we have a 1Ghz CPU, 512 MB Ram, and it does not break a sweat either. However it's a small box with no room for a 3rd NIC, thus our upgrade, because I want to install a DMZ for our servers.

With something like this there are always different degrees to an upgrade path. With ASL not needing alot of resources to begin with, one always has to ask at what point do you reach a point of "diminishing returns". That and some companies also have a tighter budget than others. Being a small Non-Profit, I need to watch how I spend my particular budget. The extra money from a SC420 to a 1750 would be much better spent somewhere else for our situation. Yours and others will be different of course. I just recommended a high performance solution that does not "break the bank" that's all.  [:)]

If you don't mind me asking what did your 1750's cost you total?

I run an Athlon 2500+ with 1GB PC3200 RAM.  80GB 7200RPM HDD, 4 x Intel Gigabit NIC's in a nice black AOpen tower case.

Runs like a dream.

I wouldn't go with 9500s-4lp unless you can first test that it works. The current system does not have support for that card, don't know if you can easily add the driver for that. However, 8006-2lp works fine. Also, the performance gain in a firewall could be barely noticeable. We have a SuperMicro server with 2.8 Ghz P4 with HT, 2x256 DDR, 3ware 8006 and 2x80GB WD SATA disks. SuperMicro MB has 2 onboard Gbit NIC's. It works very well, I recommend.
