Uh... How many conections do you have to your asl? You can run it on a 350MHz but it depends on how many clients are going to connect to it. 

I am running ASL 5.050 Beta on a AMD K6-2 300MHz, 512MB PC133, 40GB 7200RPM HDD. This runs ok, it can be a bit sluggish at times. I need my AMD 2600+ for a gaming rig   so I put together the AMD K6-2. My average cpu usage is around .10 - .45  However I am going to upgrade the processor to a K6-2 500MHz. I think this will run great. I have 4-5 computers connecting to my asl at one time. I am running HTTP Proxy with surf control and VP, DNS Proxy, POP3 Proxy with VP and SPAM, SOCKS Proxy and IPS. I don't have any internal mail servers so I don't run SMTP Relay. I have 4-5 computers accessing my asl at one time.

So to answer your question it is possible to run, but the performance you get will depend on  the amount of computers on the LAN and the amount of services you are running (Http proxy etc.). You can always use Astaro's handy little hardware calculator and see what sort of hardware you could use. Here is the link  Hardware Calculator 

I always go for the the second recommendation the calculator gives "calculated hardware requirements - all seclected options used by every user everytime".

Well this is for my home network so it will be about 7 systems connecting to it but not all at one time. Maybe know more than 4 at one time. Also it will only be used as a frontend firewall. I will have isa server 2004 running on the backend so it will be doing proxying for http and most likely smtp. I ran version 4 on a p2 233 and it was fast I don't see why it takes so much power to pull version 5. I actually considered switching to smoothwall because there hardware requirements are very low.

It should work fine but webmin will be slow.

IPS might not be fast enough though.

Well if you are just using it for SMTP Relay and Http proxy use IPCOP with url filter and copfilter. If you know how to navigate around a linux box it should be no problem. The addons install really quickly and it should run really smooth. Copfilter just released their new version with smtp proxy relay and url filter is a great squid based http proxy. Not that I am supporting IPCOP but Astaro is everything for me. I love the virus filtering and all the cool features. But if all you are wanting is Http proxy and Smtp proxy, without the added overhead of powerful hardware than use the IPCOP with the above mentioned addons. If you need help just drop me a line and I can walk you through it.
