5.027 Kernel Upgrade...!

I have updated three ASL v5.026 boxes to v5.027, which each use very different hardware, and so far encountered no problems.

Actually, I just discovered now that CPU load dropped by 40..60% depending on the hardware, e.g. on a P-II/350 MHz CPU load dropped from nearly 60% to 30%, and on a Xeon 2.7 GHz from nearly 15% to 6% or so.

Quite a pleasant surprise!

after upgrading to the latest kernel we are no longer able to use FTP using the built in W2K ftp tool. The following error is generated:

150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for > Netout :Connection reset by peer
Connection closed by remote host.
ftp> close
Not connected.
ftp> bye

When using a general FTP program it works fine. Transfer fails when using the windows FTP tool.

Have you tried using PASV?

In my experience, PASV ftp usually makes things worse, especially if doing MASQ/NAT, etc.

Dunno if it'd help in this case though.

no I'm not using PASV. Things broke after installing 5.027. Before that the FTP script worked perfectly fine. Chaning to PASV didn't solve the problem. FTP is aborted during transfer at random positions.

Followimg my upgrade to 5.027 I'm having problems browsing some SSL and non-SSL sites too.  Any news of a fix ?

I have investigated these issues and found that Symantec firewalls may cause problems. They may reply to a SYN packet with an ACK packet (instead of SYN-ACK) and expect an RST packet back. If they receive the RST packet, then incoming connections are handled correctly afterwards (by issuing SYN-ACK). This mechanism is an unusual behaviour which may or may not work in reality.

Could you please provide we with URLs and sites that cause problems? Either post it to the UBB or e-mail me directly.

 Interestingly the problem only seems to happen when using an ADSL internet connection. If I use my leased line internet connection the problem does not occur - perhaps it is an MTU issue with the ADSL connection ?

This is interesting, I ihave the content filter turned on with a/v under transparent mode with strict tcp/ip on and all of those sites came up fine.  I am on a verizon DSL connection.  This is one i am watching closely.

We're using a T1 connection - copper.

I'm on Cable, standard ethernet MTU.

I've noticed that it is much worse when there is other traffic (p2p, not saturating) at the same time.

I'm not using ASL content filter or http proxy, but am using a Squid proxy in my DMZ.
