"Invalid Mode Number" on boot

When I boot my Dell GX110s running ASL 5.025 I get an error about an invalid mode number. I've heard that the chipset Dell uses does not support boot splash. That's fine. During boot, if I enter nosplash at the Boot: prompt it boots with no problems.
I've edited the lilo.conf file so that the "default" label secion matches the "nosplash" section for "vga" and "append" but it still gives the error while booting. What's the additional step to get the lilo.conf chnages to take effect?
