configurations with more than 5 NICs

hi,

i'm just interested if there's someone out there having more than 5 interfaces istalled. (what about irq sharing, etc)
if so a small discription about the board and the nics would be verry nice. just tell me your expirience

    I had a system running ASL3 with 5nics, and I think it had room for one more.

    Intel board (810 or 815 chipset), one onboard NIC, onboard VGA, and we used 4 Intel NICs.

    Giga-Byte has some motherboards with onboard or AGP VGA, VIA NIC, +  5 PCI slots.

    Or, just get some 4-port NIC cards (Intel, D-Link, whatever. See the HCL first).

    Or use a VLAN switch.

    Also, some of the big server boards have lots more slots.

    lots of other people here have mentioned the 4-port intel cards, and a few the D-Link 580 or something like that.

    Several multi-port cards are listed in the Astaro HCL (Hardware Compatibility List).

    How many interfaces do you need?

    Have you considered getting a VLAN switch?

    hi,

    no i don't want to use a vlan switch - i need about 8 interfaces.
    i had tried an installation with 6 nics but i got irq sharings and it seems that asl has a problem with tihs, because my box was unusable after installation. (just a login into webmin worked -> and then the system hanged) i have also tried different nics.
    the 4-port nics are seems to be great - i'll give them a try - maybe one onboard nic, the 4-port nic and an additional 3com nic.

    If IRQ sharing isn't working, it's probably the motherboard's fault.

    You can try ASL's "classic kernel" with NO APIC and NO ACPI; it might work better with your hw.

    it thought it's generally a problem if irq sharing comes up.

    i should try to disable acpi and install the classic kernel

    Try also to disable Parallel port / audio devices & similar  from BIOS settings.
    I'm using a 6 eth firewall (2 gbic on-board + 1 dlink 580) - with no problem

    all this stuff is already disabled.
    i've tried today all possibilties without success. (trying different nics, installing classic kernel, disabling apm/acpi in bios, etc) just the whole stuff -> and nothing worked. with more than 3 realtec interfaces my asl works for some minutes, than it stopps, than it works, etc.....
    i'm getting  

    someone out there using two 4-port nics with success?

    I've got 4 Intel NICs in a Dell GX110 plus the on-board NIC (3Com I think)there is some IRQ sharing and I'm experiencing no problems. I'm even on the "dreaded" 5.025 patch.
    There's one open slot left, I was thinking about trying a 6th NIC but don't really have a need for it yet. I was thinking about just slapping one in and trying it out.

    P-III, 600MHz
    256 MB RAM
    10 GB HDD

    ok, so you have realized no problem with irq sharing.
    i'm still running an extended memory test. seems that there's something wrong, because i've seen some adresses on the console scrolling down like the matrix code.

    also the installation somethimes ends with failed and also some adresses. and somethimes it istalled successfully. i don't know, but it might be the ram. because the cdrw-drive is ok and the cd-r , too (tried different).
