Experiencing extreeme lag on net connection to internett.
Ping average 200 ms, where normal is 30. And in extreme times up to 2000ms. My ADSL line out is no where near its limits, running 2 Mbit down and 256 out. With current load about 1 Mbit down and 120 - 160 kbit out.
I'm starting to suspect that my hardware is to weak for my connection load.
At the time I'm experiencing extensive portscan activity, from hundreds of different IP adresses ( Probably becouse of P2P clients behind FW ). Totaly I have a average connection count of 1000 - 3000 connections. Where normal is about 500.
I'm running Astaro V5.23 with PIII 733 Mhz, 512 MB ram.
Could this be due to anything other than the hardware ?
Im also wondering if the connection count of 3000 is correct from NetAdmin. Becouse that can not be all from P2P traffic, that will generate 500 Max.
Totaly I have a nett with three zones.
-ADSL ( Internett 2Mbit / 256 )
-DMZ ( 10 Mbit to people next dor for LAN file sharing )
-Internal ( 100 Mbit - My own net )
Have 6 Active IP's... +/- Total 10 user lisence...
Memory conumption is about half of available, running with 512 MB and using about 256 average.
When I trie between the different local sones I get ping times below 10 ms.
First off I'd like some tips on what I might be troubling with here..
As I see it it might be several different issues, and they combined are not good.
-Extremley high connection numbers ( P2P )
-Extremley many portscans ( Becouse of P2P ) ( One every 30 - 60 sec )
-To slow hardware ?
-Complex Packet Filter rules ( Before 40 lines, now 10 )
-Full virus protection ( Pop and web ) + Proxy
Is this too much for a PIII 733 ?
[:S]
All help, tips, speculations and arrogance would be apreciatet
Right now I realy don't know where to start making changes..
My main problem might be that I wish to combine two impossible things, low lagg ( ping times for online gaming ) and at the same time, utelize the free capasaty for the ADSL linje for P2P volume transfers.
Vegard
