We are looking at upgrading the hardware on our ASL server since we are upgrading to V5 and the server now running V4 is pretty old. We will be running the full HTTP virus scanning on the new server. The server has to support less than 50 users, most of whom will barely access the Internet with a couple of very heavy users.
One of the major attractions of ASL is that it was supposed to run on older hardware. However, I am concerned about what the load that virus scanning all web traffic will put on the server.
Just to throw out an example, would it be better to use an old server-quality box with, say, dual 1GHz PIII processors or a newer cheap bare-bones system with an AMD Athlon XP 3000?
Just out of curiosity, I also have sitting here an 866MHz Compaq slim form factor desktop with on-board NIC and two PCI slots, but it has a blown low-order (8-bit) DMA controller [the high-order (16-bit) DMA chip does work] that makes it impossible to use with Windows. I wonder if ASL V5 would work there.
