Cable Modem

I have succeeded in installing the software and connecting via WebAdmin to finish the configuration of ASL.  I am having a problem connecting to the internet.

What is the procedure,  correct selection for the interface, for setting up a cable modem?  I am using COX in Virginia.  My current router is just hooked into the cable modem and automitaicaly gets an IP address from the ISP with nothing further required.  In the documentation all that is discussed is the DSL PPPoE etc.  Is this the same procedure for a cable modem?  If anyone with COX as their ISP I would appreciate some help on what to enter to get internet access.

    If you're using a router between your cable modem and ASL you need to set up your external interface as a standard TCP/IP connection. The PPPoE stuff is only if you're connected directly to your DSL or Cable modem.

    Thanks for the information.  I do have a 3COM router with a firewall in it.

    What would be the easiest and/or the best way to go:

    1) keep the router and I assume disable the firewall and DHCP, and use the standard ethernet card configuration or 

    2) do away with the router and use the PPPoE to go directly to the cable modem and use the ASL for DHCP, firewall, etc.

    Actually, take the router out and connect the external interface on asl to cable modem. Go to webadmin and setup the external interface for dhcp. Your isp will provide asl with an ip. Then setup internal interface and rules.

    Do I need a patch cable or a cross over cable for the connection of the external NIC to the cable modem?

    I used a regular patch cable and my ISP IP came up and both internal and external cards appear to be up and the IP address correct.

    I changed my management machine to obtain an IP address thru DHCP from ASL and that worked fine. 

    All appears to work except I still cannot get connected to the internet.  Are there any rules/privleges in the menus that need to be set in order to allow traffic from the internal network to the internet?

    I worked this issue offline with Jim M. above and fixed the problem. 

     After creating a packet filter rule,creating a Masquerading rule and fixing the bad default gate assignment by the DHCP server all is up and running.
