Intel Pro/1000 MT Dual or Single port NIC?

I'm going with the Intel Pro/1000 MT Server NICs but need to know if it's better to go with the single or dual-port versions? 

Here are my questions:
* let's say I purchaser two dual-ports: does that mean when I assign a single IP for each card their respective second port acts as failover?
* if I went with dual-port, how do I configure ASL so it knows the difference between the primary live port and the secondary failover? 
* What is the linux kernel version of ASL 5? Intel has drivers for 2.2.x & 2.4.x -- the HCL says Astaro supports the dual-port version (what about the single-port?)
* What is it about these cards that will prevent internet connection freezing? Lesser desktop 10/100 cards seem to freeze the internet connection every two weeks in my lab environment. Rebooting fixes the problem. Intel says their Pro/1000 NICs utilize a dynamic update process to prevent this...is that true? Is that what heartbeat capable means?

    If you purchase a dual port card, than the system see's two different cards, just if you would use two single port cards.
    It is up to you if you configure both itnerfaces as active or if you use as the HA heartbeat interface.

    ASL V5 currently uses  2.4.21 linux kernel. We have already integrated one of the latest Intel drivers that support mostly all Intel single, double or quad port cards.

    I am not quote sure what you mean with internet connection freezing.
    The Intel Pro/1000 nics have a feature called Interrupt Mitigation or CPU cylce safer, which prevents freezing of the system if a very big amount of packets gets send to the card. Yes the Gigabit as well as new Intel 10/100 cards have integrated that kind of protection.

    no, the heartbeat is the communication between Master and the Slave device in a High Availability setup.
    The heartbeat is a dedicate network segment, mostly only a cross-over cable between two firewall boxes.
    This network segment is used to check if the other device is alive and to synchronize the configuration between the master and the slave.

    I understand the function of the dual-port card better, thanks! Now, I think I'll go with the single-port model instead, less technology crammed onto the same card, fewer moving parts the better.

    Do you have info on setting up fail-over NICs?
    In your opinion, is the "cost" of configuring fail-over too much considering I could simply replace a failed card anew? Or is there something else at play that I should consider?

    Depends on your situation.

    If you are "mission critical" and require close to 100% uptime I'd configure a failover box.

    Otherwise just use a single card and if it breaks, pop it out and stick in a new one.

    I've not had a single Intel NIC card fail in the last year and I have close to 50 of them.
