5.023 Bug?

Yesterday I applied the 5.023 patch and today, out of nowhere both interfaces dropped and ASL became deaf and dumb.  Nothing could go out or into the box.  I quick did some configuration checking but I quickly found out that ASL is laid out differently than any linux I've used. So, because I had nowhere to move, I did a quick re-install and config restore. 

Anyway, is there a bug in 5.023 that makes all interfaces, not including lo, drop? I don't want to apply that update again if it's just going to do this again.   Is there something else that would have caused this?  

On an unrelated issue, is there a way I can allow ping from the console?  Thanks.

    I wish that were it.  The interfaces did not come back up, even after multiple reboots and periods of waiting.

    We have also problems with 5.023, but only with ie(5.5 or 6) on nt4
    and user authentication (ldap against AD).
    The browsers just hang instead of showing the authentication window. These browsers work on other OS (2k, XP), and so do
    other browsers on NT4 (netscape).
