using the COM1 port for remote shell admin?

I have purchase a decommisioned Nokia IP440 firewall, with 2x ZYNX quad port NIC's, P3 CPU, usual bits just in a sexy 4U chassis...... I have been running Astaro v5 on the box for just under a week, was wondering if it is possible to use the COM1 port for local administration instead of connecting a keyboard/monitor? The system used to run IPSO (until the hard drive died, then I bought the unit, second hand)..... when it was running IPSO, the console port could be used with a remote terminal/dumb terminal to gain full console access to the system...

I have tried connecting to the system with the same cable as was used with IPSO but I am getting no output unfortunately (I have tested the port and cable)...

    hi u need to edit the file: /etc/inittab
    plz uncomment the following line:
    # s0:123:respawn:/usr/sbin/mgetty ttyS0
    (the last line in the file)
    and after an reboot it should work ok [:)]

    Additional you should check /etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.conf for setting the interface speed. By default this is set to 9600 8N1, we usually set this to 38400 8N1. Also the activation of a serial prompt for the lilo boot loader is a good idea otherwise you couldn't change anything during boot up. For this purpose, delete the # in /etc/lilo.conf in the respective line so it will look like "serial=0,38400n8".
