Commnet : Hardware config needed to run ASL 5.011

FYI....

ASL version 5.011 :

Config :

P3 450, 256 Mb Memory
20 Gb IDE 5400 RPM drive
2 10/100 D-Link Nic Cards

I have seen so many posts of people discussing the hardware they use for the ASL product.  However, I am running the above hardware with pop3/smtp proxy, virus protection, spam protection all on (finally, looks like the pop3 proxy is working much better in the 5.011 release).  However, turning on the http proxy (with surf protection) takes the system to it's knees.  I only have 4 computers behind my configuration.  If 2 or more of the systems are surfing with http traffic, the ASL system introduces too much latency in web page response time.  In fact, over 10 or 15 minutes, pages begin to time out.

I have loaded another system with ASL 5.011, P4 2.0 Ghz, 512 Mb memory, 2 - 10/100 NICs, 20 Gb IDE 5400 RPM Drive.  Same configuration, with all above mentioned proxies and protection enabled and I have no performance bottlenecks.

I know this is not "scientific", but  I don't think the P3 processors cut it for the http proxy IMO.   The P4 2 Gb with 512 Mem cost me about 200 bucks -- well worth it (MB+CPU+mem dimms -- already had all other parts)

You've just exemplified something that some of us on the board have been preaching lately -- if you want ASL 5.x to perform, especially if you're going to start running filtering, you've GOT to throw some horsepower at it. Here are some numbers to think about: ASL 5.x on a 2 Ghz system with 1GB of RAM will provide a throughput of about 750 Mbps. That's darn impressive. On that same system, if you start cranking up filtering (Intrusion Protection, Content Filtering, etc.), you can expect performance to drop to about 200 Mbps. That's impressive, too, considering all that's going on. Now let's consider something slower, how about a 500 Mhz system with 256MB of RAM. Straight performance is about 100 Mbps, turn up the filtering and you're down to about 15 Mbps of throughput. Those numbers are totally unofficial, but the test results show what the real difference is. And don't forget, the numbers may improve dramatically as Astaro continues to tweak version 5. Astaro is correct -- you CAN run their product on their minimum recommended hardware of a 400Mhz processor with 256MB of RAM. Just don't expect to be able to run a whole office off of that machine.
