Intel E1000 NIC, NOT VERY FUN !!!

As some of you allready might know, not all E1000 cards from Intel works very good with Linux or ASL in this case. I have an 1U Intel Server with 2 Dual E1000 Networks cards. This seems to work fine, until I begin to plugin more than 1 network wire. Communication with my Cisco routers does not work, communication with other hosts in the network gives a packet loss of 90-95% !!! This is most annoying and Astaro wont help me cause this hardware is not on theyr support list, something that is kindof ok with me. The question is then, should I compile my own ? If I where to compile my own I need the kernels sources and a proper compiler enviorment, pluspack ?.... does not exist for Version 5.0xxx which I am currently running.

If someone would volantair to compile a fresh driver from Intel for me or give me some hints of other possible solutions I would be very greatfull.

My only alternative right now is to install some other nics, which really is NO alternative !!

    Which Cards are this exactly ?
    Intel DualPort 1000MT are found on the HCL.

    Morten, your predicament reminds me of a large firewall vendor I know of that released their firewall as a software load, only to later remove it from the market and sell only a preloaded appliance -- because people kept trying to use hardware that wasn't on their HCL.  The difference between Astaro and that other company is that Astaro supports a relatively large assortment of hardware (not to mention that ASL is a darn good product).  But back to your predicament -- well, if Astaro has told you that your NIC cards aren't on the HCL, then that pretty much gives you your options.  You can either find a way to change the NICs in your box, or use a different machine.  As far as compiling your own driver goes, this would probably create a huge mess and would certainly void your warranty.  Astaro is locked down pretty tight and unless you're a hobbyist with a knack for tinkering and won't be putting your firewall up on a production network, it probably wouldn't be in your best interest to go in and hack the system.

    I am talking about the PWLA8492MT card from intel and the standard Torrey Pines 1U barbone server which also has a dual nic on the mother board, I think it is the same card.

    I am well aware of the dangers of "rolling my own", but this is a risk I am willing to take. After looking at the other Intel drivers on the system, I cannot see any changes that has been made by Astaro.

    All in all, Ill take my chances and hope that also these kind for NICS are included in future versions of the high quality firewall software package ASL has become.

    I would assume that this is the same Card as 
    82546GB PRO/1000MT Dual Port Server Adapter
    from the HCL
    Since http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/pro1000mt_dual_server_adapter.htm
    mentions the 82546 Gigabit Controller in the Specs.

    But I do not really know about Intels Productnumbers.......

    I am using 4 x Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter cards in my 5.011 setup.  Works very well.  These are single port gigabit adapters. (8390 series).

    This uses the Intel® 82541GI Gigabit Controller
    The card you are using is Intel® 82546 Gigabit Controller.  Different chip so I guess it needs a different driver.

    I find it more strange that when I compile kernel modules from Intels newest sources, it stil does not work. Maybe it is a configuration prolem after all ?

    Any ideas will be very much appriciated.

    It seems like it cooks down to be a IRQ problem !?!?!

    The following is the output from my /proc/pci which is grepped to remove unwanted information:

        Ethernet controller: PCI device 8086:1075 (Intel Corp.) (rev 0).
          IRQ 9.

        Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 16).
          IRQ 5.


    The first and last in the listing is the onboard dual card (100 + 1000) and the two in the middle is the pci addon card which is the dual 1000MT card mentioned here.
