Load vs NIC count vs required hardware

I am starting to put together a kit list for a new box for astaro.

It was going to be rack based but rack mount makes everything much more expensive.

Now I am going for microATX with multiport NICs.

What I am curious about is the load vs NIC count. In theory i could have 3 Quad NICs totalling in 12 + 1 onboard NIC.

Most of these would not be used for more than one PC (i.e. lots of DMZ's) but since Snort etc operate on every NIC is there anyway to estimate the required hardware.?

Anyone have any experience. Something like and Athlon XP 2200+ with 512 + 1Gb memory be enough?

I should aslo say there will be a few VPN's and every feature will be turned on. It is a home envirnoment (geek home with lots of kit but only a couple of users [;)]

    It can cost a lot more to build a machine than to buy a complete one these days.  If you go to the Dell website and click into the small business area, you can buy an entry-level Poweredge server for $349.  That's a P4.  The only thing you'll have to do is pop in some more memory (it comes standard with 128MB).  There's an onboard NIC, ASL will recognize it fine, but you might want to put in a couple more NICS.  We deploy a lot of Astaro firewalls on this platform, it rocks.

    this is a very popular and reliable platform as i know of another ataro partner not too far from me that deploys tons of ASL boxes using this exact server..[:)]

    I spotted that exact box!

    I was hoping to build my own rack mount solution as I have quite alot of decent atx based hardware kicking about. Just a matter of combining and checking all the bits.

    The thing that get me is the price of atx rackmount cases. I'd need a 4U case if i anted to forget about riser cards (not a big deal in itself but i can limit NIC count).

    Saying this it might be time to get my tape measure out and price a shelf for this Dell server [:)]

    It's VERY quiet, you can't hear the fan running, which makes it an ideal choice for offices.  I feel your pain on the rackmount solution -- if you want to save some money, use a 2U case instead of 1U.  But be prepared for the racket -- the rackmount cases sound like a jet aircraft at times.  We deploy 2U systems for rackmounts, which allows for more cost-effective components, better internal airflow, and more than one PCI slot.  But even at that, they're still VERY expensive -- in my opinion, rackmounts should be used only when absolutely necessary.
