Load vs NIC count vs required hardware

I am starting to put together a kit list for a new box for astaro.

It was going to be rack based but rack mount makes everything much more expensive.

Now I am going for microATX with multiport NICs.

What I am curious about is the load vs NIC count. In theory i could have 3 Quad NICs totalling in 12 + 1 onboard NIC.

Most of these would not be used for more than one PC (i.e. lots of DMZ's) but since Snort etc operate on every NIC is there anyway to estimate the required hardware.?

Anyone have any experience. Something like and Athlon XP 2200+ with 512 + 1Gb memory be enough?

I should aslo say there will be a few VPN's and every feature will be turned on. It is a home envirnoment (geek home with lots of kit but only a couple of users [;)]

    I think is less of a NIC count issue than it is an issue if traffic. A huge hit to throughput is the use of IPS. I've done FTP tranfers from Internal to DMZ and gotten about 9000 KB/s with IPS off. With it on I get about 6000. I had posted more optimistic rates in another posting but these numbers seem to me more the norm. But I'm only using a P3-550.

    thast quite a hit in performance. More than i ould have expected but Snort is pretty CPU intensive.

    At first i was going to use older hardware but with things coming down in price i am going for a all in one motherboard with an Athlon CPU.

    Just researching the cheapest combination. The most expensive single part is going to be the case. Silly but true.

    I like using used mid-tower or full size desktop computers. They're not elegant or pretty but they are CHEAP and can usually hold 4-5 PCI devices. Disable the onboard sound to free up an additional IRQ. My main ASL machine has 4 PCI slots plus an onboard NIC. 2 years ago I think I paid about $130USD.
    An Athlon 2400+ shouldn't have any problem with home network traffic volume.
