Update 5.011 installation

what speed is your cpu and how much ram.  As per the announcement this could take a while to complete.  How long did you wait?

Currently its a PIII with 600MHz and 512MB RAM. I waited 30min to an hour...
After several tries, with several reboots to stop the update process, the update could be successfully installed. Don't know what went wrong, but now my ASL is up2date!

What size HDD ?

For what it's worth, we've been testing ASL 5.x in our company lab on various deployment platforms.  The worst performer was a 600Mhz system with 512MB of RAM, it's been chucked.  For small environments (10-15 users or less), a 1 Ghz box works fine.  Above that, we're using 2.4 Ghz Dell boxes and the performance is stellar.  If at all possible, you should consider moving above the 1 Ghz mark with ASL 5.  Time to retire the old iron!

I'm running v 5 fine on a PIII 666 at home with 256MB RAM.

This is with most of the fruit turned on.  I'd say it would be fine for 10-50 users.

The difficulties we've encountered at the sub-1 Ghz level don't occur right away, although the WebAdmin is noticeably slower than on faster systems.  After some hours of use in a busy office environment where users are downloading files/web surfing/checking email, the system gets sluggish and the users start complaining.  Drop in a faster system and it runs like a banana peel on ice.  Given the low cost of hardware these days, I still see no reason to try to run ASL *commercially* on old hardware.  Home users, however, may be mostly unaffected by this.

Frankly this has been posted about serveral times..however yes added features need more power BUT there were some coding errors(and may still be some) that faster hardware simply mask instead of being seen..this is where "older hardware" comes in.  Frankly right now any deployments i do are v4..v5 jsut isn't ready..you should not have to throw a ghz plus mahcine at linux software to make it run right..[:)]
