A few newbie question (SnapGear->ASL conversion)

I have a few very newbie questions.
I have a SnapGear Soho+ router that I would like to replace with a ASL 5.09 box.
The Snapgear is positioned between the cable modem and the switch. Can I just replace the SnapGer with an ASL box or stil need to keep the SnapGear and put the ASL box between the SnapGear and the switch ?

current setup:     cable modem ---- SnapGear Router ----- Switch ----Internal LAN
new1  setup:        cable modem ----  ASL ---- Switch ----- Internal LAN
new2  setup:       cable modem ---- SnapGear Router ----- ASL ----- Switch ----Internal LAN

I would prefer the "new1" solution but can be convinced to "new2".

Additional Questions:
Can someone help me out how to setup port forwarding in ASL ? Is DNAT = Port Forwarding ?
Is there any way to setup dynamic DNS with a service provider other than DynDNS ?
Is there any way to automaticaly add to the list of DNS servers the one assigned by DHCP to the external interface ?

You can use either the "new1" or "new2" configuration, it will work either way. But if you leave the SnapGear router in place, you get the extra admin work of opening ports on it for whatever features you wish to make available to the outside world through the ASL box.

I used to have a Linksys router. Then I got an ASL v4 box set up, which I initially placed in behind the Linksys router. That lasted 6 weeks, then I removed the Linksys router and sold it.
